Everybody in the world has one name at least. And to each person his name is important because it is his own.
Remember how you don't like it very much if people can't remember your name, or pronounce it wrong? Remember how you like to see it printed in the newspaper or even on the blackboard at school? That's because it is your own and only you can have it.
Of course, names aren't important in themselves. There are no “good” names or “bad” names. But they are useful in our life. You don't have to go around shouting!
“Hey, You!”or “Hello. Girl-with-the-red-hair.”or “Thank you, Man-who-lives-at-the-end-of-the-street.” Wouldn't it be foolish?
A person's name means something. For example. John or Nathan means “present”. James or Jacob means “he follows after.” Frank means “free”. Charles has “strong” in meaning. Thomas is a word for “twin”. Girls'names mean something, too. If you know a Mary or a Miriam, her name means “star of the sea.” Helen means “l(fā)ight”. Rebecca, “very beautiful”. Rhoda is a “rose”.
Now first names are all we need when we've at home. For it isn't very often that two sisters or two brothers have the same first name. But it's different when you go out to play or go to school. You may have a lot of Johns and Davids and Sues. You could get all mixed up and not know who was who. That's why last names started. And last names are really nicknames(綽號(hào)).
It happened like this: There was a certain Richard. Since his father's name was James, he was called “Richard, son of James.” And later just Richard Jameson.
The place where they lived gave some people their last names. For example, Mr Short was talking about Joseph.
“Which Joseph?” someone might ask.
“Why, the Joseph who lives in the field.”
And right then that Joseph had a last name: Joseph Field. You can think of many more last names that started that way.

Dear Roni,
Italy is wonderful. We started in Rome two weeks ago, drove to Florence last week and now we're on our way to Venice. Three weeks just isn't enough.
The country near Florence is so beautiful-h(huán)ills, olive trees. And red roofs(屋頂) of the houses look so nice far away.
I am afraid I am getting bigger-the food here is so delicious!
Love,
Akemi

Hi Roni,
I can't believe(相信) you went to school here in Honolulu! Why did you leave?
I spend each morning on the beach(海灘) and in the water. The sand is so soft and the beaches seem so long. The water is just the right temperature.
One afternoon, I left the beach to walk in mountains near Honolulu. I enjoyed myself very much there.
How I miss you!
Mari

Dear Roni,
Maybe I'm strange but I love the desert(沙漠)!
Last week, our group spent four days in the desert. At times, it felt like the moon.
I always thought deserts were all the same! They are not. Some parts look like mountains; others are really different.
And when we find something green--a few plam trees, a little water, we feel good and great.
See you in September,
Kim

Plant scientists consider them as fruit. Most other people think of them as vegetables. Whatever you call tomatoes, there are many different kinds of this popular and healthy food.
There are two groups of the plants. Small tomato plants grow to about one meter. They can be planted rather close together. Some short kinds do not require special care and are often gotten crop by machines. Large tomato plants can grow over two meters tall. They also produce larger fruits.
People who grow only a few plants can place wire cages around each one. The cage can be made of wire fence material. The cage helps the plant grow taller and produce a better crop.
Tomatoes often need extra calcium (Ca), or the fruits may be ruined. Add lime to the soil can solve this problem. Dry lands may also ruin the fruits. Tomatoes need water regularly. The soil should never dry out completely. Dried grass or leaves placed around the plant can help hold water in the soil and stop the growth of unwanted plants.
Tomatoes are native to South America. The tomato is a member of the potato family. The leaves of the plant are poisonous, like the leaves of its relatives. Before the 18th century, people grew tomatoes only as pretty plants. They called the bright red fruit a “l(fā)ove apple”, but would not eat it.
