【題目】 If you look around the streets of London, you'll see the many methods people use to move around. Whether ifs a way to work, a trip to the shops, or a sightseeing trip, there are people on buses, the underground, cars, motorbikes, bicycles and even roller skates. The roads are already ______ : and now there's a new addition: electric, or "e-scooters".

This traditional children's vehicle has become more welcomed over the years. And now, with a small electric motor, it's become a cheap and easy way of ______ . Scooting around town can be fun and doesn't need much effort, so they're becoming increasingly welcomed in cities around the world. But following some serious accidents caused by an electric scooter in the UK, questions are being asked about their safety and ______ traffic laws should be changed.

Some scooter riders have been seen on pavements; others on the road jumping red traffic lights, adding to traffic jams on the road. In the UK, the law says that riding one on the public highway or pavement is not ______ . Riders now face a 300 punishment and six points on their driving license for doing so. But, still e-scooters can be seen ______ . And now users are calling on rules to be changed.

The UK government is looking at how safely they can be used on the road and is examining the law again. But the official said, "It is an ______ product. We know there is need among people. However, safety must always be the first to consider when talking about their use on public highways in this country."

There are dangers in riding a two-wheeled scooter. Some of them can drive at high speed, over 30mph. They sometimes only have one brake (剎車) and no lights. It seems more work needs to be done to give e-scooters a safe and right space to travel in.

when什么時候;whether是否;what什么;who誰。根據(jù)“questions are being asked about their safety…traffic laws should be changed”可知,交通事故后,他們開始質(zhì)疑這種交通工具的安全性以及相關(guān)的交通規(guī)則,所以是交通規(guī)則是否要改變,故選B。

touched感動的;designed有計劃的;programmed程序化的;allowed允許的。根據(jù)“Some scooter riders have been seen on pavements; others on the road jumping red traffic lights, adding to traffic jams on the road.”

因為全文都在講這是一種新型的既方便又便宜的交通工具,故排除A、B;根據(jù)最后一段對這種工具的描述“a two-wheeled scooter”、“only have one brake (剎車) and no lights”可知,它是一款普通的產(chǎn)品,故選D。

【題目】 It was 21 years ago, on a very cold morning, Mary opened the library in New York. She heard a cat cry and found a white cat in a pile of books at last.

Mary recalled, “His little feet were frozen, we gave him a bath to warm him up and he purred(咕嚕叫)all the time.”

It was a Cinderella story for Garfield in 1988, the cat who has lived happily among the books ever since.

“His story has a life of its own,” Mary says while reading the cat’s fan mail. “We have people drive hundreds of miles out of their way just to see Garfield. We even had a Japanese public television crew come here to make a short film of him.”

Shortly after the cat’s rescue, a photo of the library’s “new employee” sitting on the card catalog appeared in local newspapers. Local people were invited to help name the cat and many cast votes . “We have never had such a big crowd for a contest and there wasn’t even a prize,” Mary says with a laugh.

Garfield grew from a popular local “l(fā)ibrary employee” to a national star with his pictures on calendars. However, he is not the only cat who lives among books. Library cats greet people in about 100 libraries across America. Most live and “work” in comfortable, small town libraries where they don’t get lost in the books. Library cats used to earn their keep by catching rats, but modern library cats have more “white-collar” duties: to act charming and make the library a pleasant homey place.

“Library cats just create a nice, warm atmosphere,” says Roma, producer of Puss in Books, the film about library cats. “The cats attract children to the library and the elderly who maybe can’t have pets in their apartments,” Roma says. “Books, libraries, and cats just go together.”

【題目】TED Talks: An Idea Worth Spreading

Have you heard of TED? TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design. TED is a set of meetings, held in different cities around the world every year. With different speakers – also from different parts of the world – all the speeches are uploaded (上傳) to their website, for everyone to see.

TED meetings invite speakers to give speeches on different kinds of topics. The different speakers are usually successful in their fields and talk about new ideas and recent developments that are important to their work. The speakers are often also well-known, with people such as Bill Gates and Jane Goodall, having given talks. There are many talks on environmentalism.

For example, and on international development, aid work, and how to help poor people. There are a number of talks about education and topics that are important in the news.

While the talks cover many kinds of topics, all speakers have a strict time limit – each speech must last less than 18 minutes.

As with all organisations (組織), however, TED has had its downs as well as ups. The organization has been criticised for turning great scientists into stars. Perhaps a bigger and more important criticism of the organization is that only special people can attend the meetings. Those who attend the meetings must be special enough to get tickets because TED events costing $6000 or more.

However, ted.org, the organisation’s website, is where the many interesting talks become reachable to everybody who has an Internet connection. Every weekday, a new video is uploaded from a TED event, allowing people from around the world to listen to the talks for free. At only 18 minutes, even if the video is not that interesting, you know you are not going to waste too much time.

Most TED talks are in English but there are talks in other languages, too. Besides, most of the English-language talks also have the choice of subtitles (字幕) in different languages and, as a result, the website is great for practising English and learning new vocabulary, especially in a topic that you find interesting and enjoyable. With so many choices of subject, the videos are often much more exciting.
