In a vacation, my brother and I decided to go off for a long walk while we were staying in the countryside. On the top of a mountain, a sudden ______ began to fall and the temperature dropped a lot. It became so dark that we couldn't see the path clearly.

It was difficult for my brother and me to ______ over rocks in the heavy rain. As I paused(停)under a tree, I noticed a cave between two huge rocks. I suggested to make a fire and warm ourselves in the cave. So my brother and I picked up some wood that was still ______ and carried it back to the cave. I lit the fire with matches in my pocket. We sat down and ate our sandwiches around it.

In the cave, the flames ______ light onto its ceiling.“Funny,”said my brother, “You can see shapes on the rock. One of them looks a bit like a deer. There is its head and there are its feet. It almost looks as if someone has ______ it.”I took a burning branch(樹枝)and went to examine the rock. Now I could see a shape of a smaller deer. Then we went further into the cave. In front of us was a wall of ______. There were birds, too, with the eyes carved(雕刻)out of the rock and painted white. We could see a snake, a bear, a wolf, but no people.

At that night, my brother and I were so ______ that we did not get to sleep until very late. We talked and wondered about the people who had lived here before. Neither of us realized that these carvings and paintings ______ back 15,000 years, nor that the title in the newspaper would be“The Find of the Century-Children Aged 13 and 11 Discover Cave Paintings.”

【題目】 Fresh green grass. Hundreds of colorful wild flowers. Water running into little pools. Birds making their homes in boxes. The 9, 500-square-metre Augustenborg Botanical Garden may look just like any other well-organized park but there’s a difference. It lies on the roofs(屋頂) of industrial and office buildings in the city of Malmo in Sweden.

Green roofs are not a new invention. And now they are getting popular again. The common roofs of a modem city have endless black surfaces with no life or water. Perhaps that’s why a garden on a roof becomes such a perfect choice for more and more people.

Green roofs are not just pretty. They also help to moderate the city temperature. The high temperatures on common roofs in the summer can make top floor flats uncomfortably hot. What is more, they play a part in making the cities hotter than the countryside around them, causing the “urban heat-island effect”. On a green roof, however, with its plants and water, temperatures change only a little, as they do in a park. This can greatly cut the costs of heating and cooling in the building below.

Also, a green roof takes in rain water, and protects the city drainage(排水) system. ____ And small animals and birds can make their homes on it. Thanks to this, the city may become part of nature, rather than something completely separate from it.

While the cost of building such a roof can still be higher, it can be cheaper in the long term as a result of energy savings. And wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to walk out into a garden high above the city’s noise and traffic, whether you're at school or in an office or just at home in a ten-floor block.

1With the example of Augustenborg Botanical Garden, the writer wants to explain ____.

A. how wildlife is protectedB. what a green roof is like

C. how to organize a good parkD. what to do with a spare roof

2The underlined word “moderate” in Paragraph 3 is the closest in meaning to “____”.

A. raiseB. checkC. recordD. control

3Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank in Paragraph 4?

A. A green roof is alive.B. A green roof stops pollution.

C. A common roof is noisy.D. A common roof increases the cost.

4The purpose of the passage is to ____.

A. discover the problems with green roofsB. introduce the change of green roofs

C. show the amazing beauty of green roofsD. describe the advantages of green roofs

The Blood Group Alphabet

Sometimes people lose too much blood from injuries or accidents. To save their lives, doctors must replace the lost blood. In an operation called a transfusion, doctors put blood given by healthy people into the veins(靜脈)of the sick or injured person. But they must be careful. Although all blood looks the same, there are really different types of blood. Someone getting the wrong type of blood in a transfusion may become very sick or even die.

All blood is made up of red and white cells, and a liquid(液體)called plasma(血漿). It is the red cells that cause blood to be different types. On the outside of the red cells of some people's blood are proteins(蛋白質(zhì)). Doctors group these proteins into two different classes, A and B. People with the A protein have Type A blood, while people with the B protein have B type blood. If someone happens to have both proteins, that person has Type AB blood. Some people don't have either protein, and their blood is called Type O.

If a person receives a transfusion of the wrong type of blood, the body senses the strange protein on the new blood cells. So the body destroys the new blood, and the patient goes into shock. For example, people with Type A blood will become very sick if they are given Type B protein because their bodies try to destroy the strange Type B protein. People with Type O blood have no proteins on their cells, so their bodies will destroy both Type A and Type B blood. They can only receive Type O blood. But people with Type AB blood have both proteins, so they can receive Type A, Type B and Type AB blood. These people are called Universal Receivers. People of any type can receive Type O blood because it has no protein for the body to fight against. So Type O people are called Universal Donors.

Doctors are always careful to test blood for its type before it is used in a transfusion. Although the wrong type of blood can be harmful, the right type can save a life.

1What is the blood made up of?

2How many classes do doctors group the proteins into?
