Social Customs

The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. This is often true for women as well as for men. Also most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seats to a woman and so will most Americans.

Neither the British nor the Americans object to (反對) standing in a queue, at the post office, the movies, the bank or anywhere. Promptness is important both in England and America. That is, if a dinner invitation is for seven o'clock, the dinner guest either arrives close to the time or calls up to explain why he will be late or why he can't come. Of course, these two peoples have other customs that are different: the Americans have “coffee breaks”, the British more often have “tea breaks”, for example. But there is much more that they have in common.

Have you ever studied abroad? Maybe it is an amazing experience, especially when you come to
Australia as an foreign high school student. You can have a lot of fun there, especially on holidays.
There are many festivals in Australia. The most important one in Christmas. Each year, the summer
holidays at every hign school last about two months from the beginning of December to February, which
covers the Christmas time. Since it is a long holiday, most foreigu students in Australia love to fly back to
their home countries to spend the time with their families and friends, but a few students still stay in
Australia during the holiday to get part-time jobs. It is quite easy to find a parttime job at Christmas.
Students often take part in another major social activity. They go to the beach to have fun in the sunshine.
The summer in Australia is from December to February,so going to the beach in December is very popular among Australians.
Easter in March is another important holiday in the year. It actually combines "Good Friday"and "Easter Monday". Almost every shop closes on Good Friday. And people usually go to see Easter Show.
The Chinese new year is not a public holiday in Australia, so every Chinese student still has to go to
school to study and do his or her normal duties.

A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop
depression (抑郁癥) as young adults.
The researchers used a national long-term survey of healthy young teenagers of about 13-16 to find
out the relationship between media (媒體) use and depression. They based their findings on more than
4000 young teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995.
As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they
watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio.
Here was the result. The young people spent five and a half hours a day using media and more than 2
hours of that was spent watching TV.
Seven years later, in 2001, more than 7% of the young people had signs of depression. The average
age at that time was 21. Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author
of the new study. He says every extra hour of television meant an 8% increase in the chances of developing
signs of depression.
The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies,
video games or radio. But the study did find that young men were more likely than young women to develop
depression given the same amount of media use.
Doctor Primack says the study did not find out if watching TV causes depression directly. But one
possibility, he says, is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like
sports and social activities. It might also prevent a person from sleeping well, he says, and that could have
an influence.
The study was just published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.
In December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy
lives. Researchers from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy
spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely
to be socially active, to read, attend social services and to vote.
Process of the study Details
The purpose of the research To find out 1_______ between media
use and depression.
At the beginning of the research 2_______ was made among over 4000 young
people who were not depressed.
The result of the survey These young people spent five and a half hours a
day in using media and they spent over 2 hours or
that 3_______
Seven years later Researchers found 7% of the young people had a
sign of depression. Every extra hour of watching TV
meant an 8% increase in the chances of developing signs
of depression.
Results of the study 1. Watching TV might have 4_______ and it may take time
     away fromactivities and sports.
2. Young men get more chance than young women
    to develop depression.

Our local Community (社區(qū)) Youth Club is a very popular organization with young people in my town.
I have been a member for four years now and I've taken part in a lot of interesting projects. These include
fun activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have even made a video.
But it isn't all just enjoyment. We have also started doing social work to help people in our neighbourhood.
We have organized activities for small children during the holidays. We have also formed a special support
group to help young people stop smoking.
We are particularly proud of the most recent group we have created. It organizes regular visits to the local
home for the elderly. This idea came from a school visit to a home for the elderly. My class spent an afternoon
at the home and everyone found the visit very rewarding (有意義的). The old people at the home were excited
by our visit. They were very talkative (健談的) and they told us their personal stories. During our visit, the
home was full of the sound of laughter. We sang songs and played games with the old people and had tea
together. But we realized that life wasn't always easy. Some of them were in poor health and were very
unhappy. They couldn't go outside and the visits by children brought some sunshine into their lives.
Many young people like me have very little contact with elderly people. As a result, we have a lot of wrong
ideas about them. We have little or no idea of the kind of lives they lead in the homes. After this visit, my
friends and I decided we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives.
Since the creation of our visiting group over twenty volunteers have joined us. Up to now, we have
organized three group evening parties and a concert. But I think the individual (單獨的) visits are the most
important. Club members regularly visit old people and everyone finds the experience rich and rewarding.
1. Is the writer a member of the Youth Club?
    _____________________________________________________.
2. How did the old people feel by the children's visit?
     _____________________________________________________.
3. Why do young people have wrong ideas about the elderly?
     _____________________________________________________.
4. What did the writer and his friends decide to do after the visit to the home for the elderly?
     _____________________________________________________.
5. Put the sentence "They couldn't go outside and the visits by children brought some
sunshine into their lives." into Chinese.
