【題目】 Do trees stop growing? The answer is both yes and no. The trunks (樹干) of trees keep getting wider,【1】. But, in fact, trees do stop growing in height. You can notice the similar height of the trees when you see a stand of trees of the same species (物種).
Just like people, the slowing in the growth of trees is related to their age. Trees grow more slowly as they age. At a certain age, they necessarily stop gaining height.【2】. But by the time the tree reaches 90 years of age, its growth has slowed to about half a meter--about a foot and a half- a year. By the time the tree is 150 years old, height growth has almost stopped, even though the tree may live another 100 years.
Some scientists suggest that tree cells ( 細(xì)胞 ) are like animal cells: that is,【3】. If a tree's cells stop dividing, then it stops getting taller. Another idea is that a tree's height is limited by the way it carries water from its roots to its leaves. Inside a tree, water moves upward, pulled towards the leaves. Some scientists put forward an idea that once a tree reaches old age and is tall enough, the downward pull of gravity (重力) makes it more and more difficult for the tree to pull the water all the way to its upper branches ( 樹枝 ) and leaves.
So do trees stop growing? They do, and they don't. At some point, their height is more or less fixed at the same height as other trees of that kind.【4】.
A.and trees add new rings year after year
B.the height growth will keep going on for centuries
C.they have to stop growing after a certain number of divisions
D.But trees continue to add width to their trunks throughout their lives to put out new branches and sprout (生長; 發(fā)芽) leaves.
E.As a young tree, it might grow two to three meters or even about seven to ten feet every year

【題目】 Old Dawson had the best apples in town, but kids knew they mustn’t go into his yard to pick a delicious apple, even off the ground, because Dawson, a badtempered (壞脾氣的) man, they said, would come after you with his gun.
One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was going to stay all night with her friend Amy. They had to walk by Dawson’s house on the way to Amy’s house. Like most of the children, Janet was scared of the old man because of the stories she’d heard about him.
Amy said that Mr. Dawson wouldn’t hurt anyone. Still, Janet was growing more nervous with each step closer to the old man’s house. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown (皺眉), but when he saw it was Amy, a big smile changed his whole face as he said, “Hello, Miss Amy. I see you’ve got a little friend with you today.”
Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight and they were going to listen to music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and offered them each a fresh picked apple off his tree.
As they walked on, Janet asked Amy, “Everyone says he’s the meanest man in town. Why was he so nice to us?”
Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house, he wasn’t very friendly and she was afraid of him, but she always smiled at him. It took a while, but one day he half smiled back at her.
After some more time, he started smiling real smiles and then started talking to her. Just a “Hello” at first, then more. She said he always offers her an apple now, and is always very kind.
We’re always trying to achieve so much, and it’s so easy to get caught up in (被卷入;陷入) everyday life that we forget we can bring cheer to ourselves and others simply. Giving a smile takes so little effort; let’s smile to others.

【題目】 Peter walked up the street. All he wanted to do was play basketball with Sam. But his father told him to return his sister’s books to the library on his way to Sam’s house.
In his idea, books and summer vacation can never go together. He thought he had read enough during the school year. So he would never enter a public library. Today he’d just dropped the books off in the outside return box, but it was locked. He had to go inside to return them.
Peter walked inside the building a few minutes before closing time. He put the books into the return box. After a quick drink of water and a short stop in the toilet, he'd be on his way to meet Sam. He walked out of the toilet. The library lights were turned off. He was locked——in a library.
Peter tried to use the telephone, but he couldn't find one. As the sun began to set, he searched for a light and found a little one on the desk.
