Compass | It was a great gift to the world from ancient China. Before it was invented, sailors had to depend on the stars to find direction. After it was invented, the oceans were open to travel. And many new discoveries were made with the help of it. |
Gunpowder | It was one of the greatest inventions. It is said that in the 3rd century a Chinese man wrote about how to make it. At first, it was used for making fireworks. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, people began to use it in wars. The method of making it was brought to the Arab world and Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries. |
Paper-making | China was the first country in the world to make paper. During the Western Han Dynasty (202B.C.—9A.D.), paper was made in some places in China. It was developed in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25A.D.—220A.D.) by Cai Lun. He made paper with bark, ropes, rags and so on. Before it was invented, the ancient Chinese carved characters on animal bones and stones. They also wrote them on bamboo and wooden sticks. |
Printing | It was developed in 1041—1048 in the Song Dynasty. A man named Bi Sheng carved characters on pieces of clay and wood. Then he put ink on them. After the characters were printed on paper, the pieces of clay or wood could be used again. This technology then spread to Korea, Japan and Europe. It was the basic method at that time. |

【題目】
Do you ever throw away food at home? Have you ever thought about what happens to the food that shops and supermarkets don’t sell? Well, you might be shocked (震驚) to find out that nearly one third of food produced for human gets lost or wasted. What’s more, around 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy life.
Many people in the UK and across the world are trying to do something about this imbalance and make use of thrown-out food that can be perfectly eaten. For example, there is a cafe in Leeds (UK) whose meals are all created using unsold food from supermarkets, including a lot of vegetables, fruit, fish and other things. This unwanted food is turned into delicious soups and all kinds of dishes that feed the hungry people of Leeds. Customers simply pay what they can afford, or help with the washing up. In just ten months, 10,000 people were fed at this cafe, using twenty tons of unwanted food!
Also, last year the UK’s first food waste supermarket opened. The supermarket is near Leeds and works on a “pay as you feel”; customers pay whatever they want for the produce. The stock (庫存) changes daily but you can usually find things such as fresh vegetables, fruit and milk there. Some low-income families have said that it has changed their lives.
“Fuel for School” is another food waste project. Surplus (多余的) food from supermarkets such as vegetables, fruit and bread is used to feed hungry schoolchildren whose families may not be able to afford to buy them lunch.
I lived in Leeds for three years, and have had lunch at a food waste cafe, and it was delicious. I couldn’t believe that it was all food that supermarkets had thrown away! I have also taken part in projects such as “Foodcycle”, using supermarkets’ unwanted food to cook meals for poor people.
More cafes like this are being opened in other parts of the UK, and it is now becoming popular in the world. I think this is an amazing act as food waste is one of the world’s biggest problems. I also believe that the law should be changed, so that supermarkets don’t throw away so much perfectly good food!
【1】800 million people in the world can’t live a healthy life because of ______.
A. unsold food B. unwanted food
C. being unable to work D. being short of food
【2】According to the passage, the writer agrees that ______.
A. buying the waste food can protect the environment
B. all the people in the world make use of waste food
C. food waste in the world can be solved by the UK soon
D. the government should make the law to stop food waste
【3】What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage people to save food.
B. To introduce some supermarkets in the UK.
C. To share his personal experience in saving food.
D. To explain why he cooked meals for poor people.

【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷下列句子正誤。正確的用“A”表示,不正確的用“B”表示。
Indian scientists have designed a new device (設(shè)備) that
they hope will solve one of the biggest problems with the use
of solar energy. They call the device a solar tree. Solar trees
have metal “branches” (分枝). Each branch holds a solar panel (太陽能電池板). These panels have flat surfaces that collect energy from the sun and turn it into electricity.
Daljit Singh Bedi is the chief (首席的) scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in India. Bedi says the shape of the solar trees makes it possible to fit more solar panels in a space than traditional systems do. This means less land would be needed to produce solar energy. “It takes about four square meters of space to produce energy. However, 400 square meters of space would be required in the past to produce the same energy,” he says.
Scientists believe the energy that a solar tree collects will be enough to power five homes. The solar tree will make it easier to provide solar energy for homes in cities. The trees will also take less space from farmers in the countryside. And that way people are able to use 10 to 15 percent more energy.
Amit Kumar is a senior engineer of the Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi. He says that it is still not clear how useful these new developments in solar power technology are. “Only when we put those trees on a large scale (規(guī)模) will we be able to get that answer,” he says.
【1】Indian scientists have solved a big problem with the use of solar energy.
【2】Solar trees can save land and produce more energy.
【3】Not every scientist agrees that solar trees are useful at present.
【4】Solar trees are widely used in India.
【5】The passage mainly introduces how to use solar energy.
