Three US scientists, Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne, won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics because of their discovery of gravitational waves which allow scientists to look at the space in a new way.

Kazuo Ishiguro ( 石墨一雄), a Japanese --born English writer, won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature because his novels remind us of how international the world is . In his first book, A Pale view of Hills, Ishiguro tells a story of a middle aged Japanese woman living alone in England. But then he went much further. When We were orphans sets the story in Shanghai. The Remains of the day tells an English butler (管家) recalling his days during the World War II. Of course, he has many other excellent books.
