Parents are asked to guard school gates every morning. Do you think it’s reasonable?

YES

NO

Sun Zhenyao, 13, Shanghai

Li Mingyi,14, Beijing

Safety comes first. Most primary schools suggest that parents should come along with their children on their way to school. I don’t think it’s a problem for the parents. They just have to stay at the school gate a little _______. Also, it’s very crowded around school gates in the morning. Traffic accidents may happen. Only _______school guards is not enough. If parents can help, there will be fewer accidents.

On weekdays, guarding schools and keeping students safe should be the school’s responsibility — not the parents’._______, the time when they have to guard is usually about 7:40 to 8 a.m., the morning rush hour. Some parents might get caught in a traffic jam and late for their work. I don’t think this task should fall on the parents.

Sun Run, 14, Zhejiang

Huang Xi, 15, Jiangsu

This request is not just about students’ safety, but also helping the school. It is a good _______ to improve relations between parents and schools. Secondly, parents can set a good example for their kids by working _______ for their school.

Most of these parents are office workers. They have their own things to do. They hurry to work every morning. To meet this new request, some may have to ask time off. This will affect their work performance. I think it’s better to ask for the parents’_______ first. If some are willing to volunteer, they can do so. But it shouldn’t be something that every parent has to do.

【題目】 Hard Work Makes Dreams Come True

Astronaut Ellen Ochoa shows that with a good education and hard work, you can reach for the stars. Ochoa is the first Hispanic astronaut woman to fly into space.

As a child, Ochoa didn’t know what she wanted to be when she grew up. But her mother always told her to stay in school and study hard. She listened to her mother. When she was 13 years old, she won a spelling contest. In high school, Ochoa spent many hours each week studying for all her classes. She finished with the best grades in her class. After high school, Ochoa went to college. One day in college she heard that the U.S. government had chosen six women to become astronauts. At that time, Ochoa decided to become an astronaut, too.

Her many years of hard work paid off at last. She was asked to be an astronaut in 1990. In April, 1993 in the space shuttle(航天飛機(jī)) named Discovery, she made history by becoming the first Hispanic woman to travel to space. Ochoa and the other astronauts had many jobs while on the Discovery. One of her tasks was to use the shuttle’s robot arm to move large objects. Ochoa used a computer to make the arm pick up a satellite and put it into space. A satellite is a spacecraft that moves around the earth or some other objects. Satellites can take pictures and gather information about planets and stars. During her second trip in 1994, she used the robot arm again. She used the arm to pull in a satellite from space. The satellite had been used to study the air around the earth. Then Ochoa went to two more shuttle trips. Altogether, she spent a whole month in space. That’s more than 700 hours.

Ochoa knows that she is a hero to many young people. She often tells them the same thing her mother told her when she was a little girl. “Get a good education and believe in yourself,” says Ochoa.

1When did Ochoa decide to become an astronaut?

A. When she was in college.B. When she was 13 years old.

C. Before she went to high school.D. After she went to work.

2On the Discovery, Ochoa used the robot arm to ______ .

A. repair the shuttle’s computerB. take pictures of the earth

C. gather information about planetsD. put a satellite into space

3Ochoa probably advises the young people to ______ .

A. fly into space one dayB. become scientists some day

C. do their best in schoolD. learn how to use robot arms

Maker Moment

Last year, Izzy Goldstein, 12, learned in science class that we can reduce air pollution by using natural energy sources, such as wind and solar power, instead of gasoline. This made her wonder what she and her schoolmates could do to help the environment. "Maybe if my school got a bike rack(架子),more kids would bike to school instead of depending on cars," Izzy told TIME for KidsRather than ask their school to buy a rack, Izzy and her friends decided to make a bike rack by themselves.

They came up with a design. They calculated how much wood they might need. They measured howlong the boards should be. They used power tools to cut them and put them together safely. And they didall this in their school's makerspace.

Makerspaces are workspaces where kids can learn to create objects using technology, engineering, art and design. These spaces often feature a mix of high-tech machines, such as 3D printers and robotickits(工具箱),and simple materials like clay and cardboard.

Izzy goes to the Harley School in New York. It is one of a growing number of schools across theUnited States with makerspaces. Makerspaces are largely inspired by Maker Faires(創(chuàng)客盛會(huì)),whichare events that give people a chance to share their creative projects. Each year, about 250,000 peopleattend the Maker Faires in San Mateo, California, and Queens, New York. Maker Faires have alsospread to countries around the world, including Egypt, France and Thailand.

Schools are introducing makerspaces to the curriculum(課程)because makerspaces give kids away to have ideas and build something from those ideas. Kima Enerson is a makerspace teacher atthe Harley School. But she says kids can become extraordinary makers in an ordinary classroom, too.In Harley's Lower School (pre-kindergarten to Grade 4), students learn about the basics of computersoftware. By third grade, they study coding and how electricity works. In sixth grade, they learn to safelyuse tools such as drills and saws. When students get to high school, Enerson shows them how to applytheir skills to solve global problems. "Throughout the process of designing, students are learning tocreate something to better the world," she says

1What did Izzy and her friends decide to make by themselves?

2What are makerspaces?

3How many people attend the Maker Faires in San Mateo and Queens each year?

4Why are schools introducing makerspaces to the curriculum?

5What can high school students learn in Enerson's class?
