We often see planes speed up on the runway and take off at the airport. Can this happen on the water?
Aircraft carriers (航空母艦) make it possible. An aircraft carrier is a type of ship that planes can fly from-and
land on-like an airport on the sea.
On the foggy mo/'ning of August 10, China's first aircraft carrier began its trial run at Dalian Port in
Liaoning and returned four days later.
The carrier was at first called the Varyag ("瓦格良"號). It was built in the former Sovriet Union (前蘇聯(lián)).
However, the Soviets failed to complete the ship. China bought the Varyag in 1998 from Ukraine (烏克蘭) after
the former Soviet Union collapsed (解體).
After the first sea trial, China will go on refitting (改裝) the ship and doing test work. Building an aircraft
carrier is hard work. There is still a lot to do, such as training pilots.
Many people remember the aircraft carriers of World War II, a war in which big ships played an important
role. The Japanese attacked the US Navy at Pearl Harbor (珍珠港) in 1941 by surprise with the help of an
aircraft carrier. The Japanese also lost the Battle of Midway (中途島之戰(zhàn)) with the US in 1942 because their
carriers were hit.
Only nine other countries in the world have aircraft carriers. Some countries consider a Chinese aircraft
carrier a threat. But China's Defense Ministry (國防部) spokesman Geng Yansheng said: "China always sticks
to the road of peaceful development. The aircraft carrier is for protecting national security (安全) and doing
more for world peace."

Mo wins Nobel for literature

CHINESE writer Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012, a somewhat unexpected choice by a prize committee that has favored European writers in recent years. In the past five years, European writers had won four awards. Presented by the Nobel Foundation, the award --- only given to living writers --- is worth 8 million kronor (?741,000). “He has such a unique (獨特的)way of writing. If you read half a page of Mo Yan you immediately know it as him,” said Peter Englund, head of the Swedish Academy(瑞典學(xué)院).

Peter Englund said in Stockholm that the academy had called Mo before the announcement(宣布). “He said he was overjoyed and frightened,” Mo, 57, is the first Chinese national to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Born Guan Moye in 1955 to a farming family in Gaomi County in Shandong Province, Mo chose his penname, meaning “don’t speak,” while writing his first novel. His breakthrough came with the novel Red Sorghum《紅高粱》published in 1987. Set in a small village, like many of his works, “Red Sorghum” is an earthy story of love and peasant struggles (農(nóng)民抗?fàn)? taking place against the background of the anti-Japanese war. It was turned into a film that won the top prize at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1988.

Mo said in a speech at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2009, “Some people may want to shout on the street, but we should tolerate (容忍) those who hide in their rooms and use literature to voice their opinions.”
