【題目】

President Obama has said that he gives each of his two daughters just a dollar a week for their chores, such as setting the table, washing dishes and cleaning up their play area and bedrooms.

People have different opinions about paying little kids for doing chores or just giving money to them. Some families think that everyone in the family should do housework, and that kids shouldn't be paid for doing so. The supporters (支持者)however, believe that kids should get paid, and that the money they get will help kids learn important skills of how to use it.

But for those who choose to give the money, it can be a headache decision on how much they should give, especially in these difficult economic(經(jīng)濟的)times. A good idea is that you can keep records of how much you spend on your child daily for two weeks and then decide how much you should give according to the average daily amount. Kids can start receiving money around ages 4 or 5, when children start to understand how money works.

2細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)短文第二段People have different opinions about paying little kids for doing

chores or just giving money to them. Some families think that everyone in the family should do housework, and that kids shouldn't be paid for doing so. The supporters (支持者), however, believe that kids should get paid可知,關(guān)于孩子做家務(wù)該不該給錢,有兩種不同的看法,一種是認為不應(yīng)該給錢;另一種認為應(yīng)該給錢。故應(yīng)選B。

3細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)短文第二段中Some families think that everyone in the family should do housework, and that kids shouldn't be paid for doing so. 可知,有些家庭認為不應(yīng)該給孩子錢,因為他們覺得家里的每個人都應(yīng)該做家務(wù),故應(yīng)選D。

4細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)短文第三段中But for those who choose to give the money, it can be a headache decision on how much they should give, especially in these difficult economic(經(jīng)濟的)times.可知,該給孩子多少錢,這是一個頭疼的決定,也就是決定這個事是困難的,故應(yīng)選C。

【題目】MOST of you may have heard about the Nobel Prize. But do you know the Ig Nobel Prize (搞笑諾貝爾獎)?The awards are given each year to 10 unusual achievements in science. It is to “honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think.

This September the 2014 winners of the Ig Nobel awards came out! Research into why bananas are slippery(滑的) won the Ig Nobel for physics.

A team of scientists from Japan, tested 12 different banana skins. They then used sensors to measure the friction(摩擦力) between the slippery side of banana skin and the ground. They found that when someone steps on a banana skin, a special chemical, polysaccharide follicular gel(囊泡多糖凝膠), is set off. This chemical reduces friction by one-fifth. Later, scientists also compared banana skin with apple skin and orange skin and showed why apple and orange skins are not quite so dangerous. Friction was about 60 per cent higher on an apple peel.

Polysaccharide follicular gel is also found in the membranes (薄膜) where our bones meet. “This idea will help to design a joint prosthesis (人工關(guān)節(jié)),” Kiyoshi Mabuchi, the lead scientist, told the BBC news.

The Ig Nobel Prize in Medicine went to doctors from the Detroit Medical Center, US. They used salt pork to stop a young child’s nose bleed. Other interesting research includes whether owning a cat was bad for your mental health and looking at ugly art can be painful.

While Ig Nobel Prizes are mostly funny, great scientific breakthroughs(突破) can be made. In 2006, a team found that a type of mosquito(蚊子) is equally attracted to the smell of feet and cheese. As a result, mosquito traps were made using cheese to fight against malaria in Africa.

Joe was an old man. The 75-year-old lived very happily in a village and had a beautiful family. Joe had four grandchildren, and they visited him during their holidays.

During one vacation, Joe was preparing his home for the kids: cleaning and buying their favorite foods. After he finished working, he realized he lost his favourite watch. The watch was a gift from his wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch very much, especially after his wife’s death. He was very upset about losing it.

Once his grandchildren came, they promised him they would find the watch.

One granddaughter asked: “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before it went missing?”

“I guess when I was cleaning the barn(谷倉)!” Joe replied.

The children looked for more than two hours with Joe, but they could not find it. The kids were now also sad, but they tried to comfort(安慰) their grandfather.

One grandson went back to the barn to search again. Joe asked why he was going there a second time. But the little boy just asked the others not to follow him and to remain silent.

He was there for about fifteen minutes and then rushed to his grandfather. He found the watch and happily gave it to Joe.

Joe was surprised and asked how he was able to find it. The little boy replied: “I sat there without making a noise, and the barn was so silent. After a few minutes, I heard the ‘tick, tick’ sound and found the watch.”
