【題目】Should Shanghai bid for(申辦) the Summer Olympics in 2028? Here are some people’s opinions.

Some people said, “The games will improve Shanghai’s global influence and the city is powerful and must try to become a platform(平臺(tái)) for major international dialogues. Shanghai has succeeded in holding the World Expo in 2010 and the city can also hold a successful Summer Olympics.”

Others, however, are not sure whether it’s a good idea. They think the Olympics would be too expensive and the money could be better spent on other things.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics brought much prestige(聲望) to the city and to China, but its cost, over $40 million, was high and the Olympic site(場(chǎng)地) in the center of the city is now largely unused. Could Shanghai learn from Beijing’s experience and do it better?

My answer is yes. As one American said, “A great city has to do great things.” Shanghai is a great city and is not afraid of facing challenges. Holding the 2028 Summer Olympics would prove that.

【題目】A primary school in US is grading (分級(jí)) parents on how much they support their children. Parents of pupils are marked from A to D based on their involvement(參與) with their children’s education.

To improve the children’s performance at school, the system encouraged their parents to attend events, such as parents’ evenings and plays, and help with learning at home. For many children at this school, it is making a huge difference. Children whose parents are in groups A and B make better progress than those whose parents are in groups C and D.

But not all parents are fond of being graded. “They’ll have us all wearing dunce’s (差生) hats next,” said a mother-of-one, who did not wish to be marked. She said that “It’s one thing when children get a bad grade, but now they openly embarrass their parents, too.” Another mother, who argued that the move had unfairly shifted responsibility from teachers to parents,?said “Those parents who work from nine to five won’t have time to have as much input as stay-at-home mums who have the time to contribute more and go to more school events.”

But Pat Walker, 63, whose eight-year-old granddaughter attends the school, supported it.

She said, “I think it’s very beneficial(有好處) to the pupils and the parents and the grandparents as well.”

【題目】5-second rule:what’s the truth?

Almost everyone has dropped some food on the floor and still wanted to eat it. If someone saw you drop it, he or she might have shouted, “5-second rule!”This so-called rule says food is OK to eat if you pick it up in five seconds or less. But is that true?

Professor Anthony Hilton from Ashton University, UK, tested the rule with his students. They found that food dropped for five seconds is less likely to contain bacteria(細(xì)菌) than if it sits there for longer.

For the study, Hilton and his students tested a lot of food—bread, pasta, cookies and candy—to see how much bacteria they had when they made contact with the floor. They allowed the food to lie on various types of flooring-carpet, laminate(復(fù)合地板), and tile (瓷磚) for three seconds to 30 seconds.

Not surprisingly, the longer the food was on the floor, the more bacteria it had. And the type of floor where the dropped food landed had an effect. Bacteria are least likely to transfer from carpet, while they’re most likely to transfer from laminate or tiled surfaces after more than five seconds.

The study also found that the wetter the food, the more likely it was to pick up bacteria. Although most people are happy to follow the 5-second rule, eating food dropped on the floor still carried an infection(感染) risk. “It very much depends on which bacteria are on the floor at the time,” Hilton told Forbes.

1What is the “5-second rule” about?

A. People often shout at someone when they drop food on the floor.

B. Food is safe when you pick up off the floor in less than five seconds.

C. It’s better to eat dropped food when it’s been on the floor for over five seconds.

D. Food will go bad when dropped on the floor in five second or less.

2Hilton’s test wanted to find out ________.

A. if the “5-second rule” is true??? B. the students’ favourite food

C. which food is easily dropped??? D. if different types of floor have different bacteria

3According to the test, we learn the following EXCEPT ________.

A. the dropped food had more bacteria if it sat on the floor for longer

B. the dropped food on carpet had the least bacteria

C. bacteria was impossible to transfer from laminate or tied surfaces

D. the wetter food was more likely to pick up bacteria

4According to the article, the infection risk of the dropped food does NOT depend on _______.

A. how long the food sits on the floor??? B. what the dropped food was

C. what the bacteria are??? D. what the weather is like that day
