The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and for the environment.

As nations developed, population increased and earning rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet1. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker.

In the Western diet, about 400 or 500 calories more than people need are eaten a day2. Overweight people have more chances for the diseases like heart disease and some cancers. Heart disease is a main cause of death in the Western countries.

Unfortunately, when people become rich, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these same health problems. Now in Asia, people have them more likely than in the West.3. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on, just nation after nation.

4. As the world’s population grows, more forests will become farmland or grasslands.5. Because of the change in diet, in the future the greenhouse gases from these areas will be more than all that which right now comes out of all kinds of transportation, such as cars, airplanes, boats and ships. So our change in diet is likely to be worse for the world, and for the weather warming than all the transportation we use now.

A. China is an example where the number of heart disease has jumped.

B. These areas will be needed to produce more food.

C. And that leads people to put on weight.

D. The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat.

E. The diet is also bad for the environment.

【題目】 American schools are quite different from those in China. In America, at the beginning of the term, students must select (挑選) their subjects and teachers first.

Selecting is very important for your marks in America. So at the first term, don’t select too many subjects, or you’ll feel very nervous and tired. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information about subjects, time arranging, marks and textbooks. At the same time, you must choose the teachers. Different teachers have different teaching methods. If the teacher is called “killer” by the last grade, many students will give up choosing him, because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and give too low grades. There is another thing after you select the subjects and teachers. How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive. Each one is about $30–50. In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library.

In class, discussing is very important. The teacher encourages you to ask questions or show your own opinions. They don’t usually ask you to sit well. Instead they allow you to sit or stand anywhere you like.
