【題目】They tell us when to get up or when we’re running late for work and whether we are in danger of missing our favourite TV programme. But while our daily activities depend on clocks that tell us the time science is discovering that our well-being is influenced by a very different kind of timepiece. Circadian rhythms---the human body’s own internal(體內(nèi)的) clock—have a powerful influence on our health and behaviour. They are programmed from birth and control functions ranging from temperature and blood pressure to sleep patterns.
In recent years researchers have also discovered that this built-in mechanism (內(nèi)在機制) can influence everything from the way we react to medicines to how well we learn music.
The latest example, from experts at Harvard University in the US, shows that the human body clock can even influence whether or not we are likely to tell the truth. Researchers found it was easier for people to tell lies in the afternoon because as they were tired, the self control that would normally prevent them from lying started to break down. Tiredness made it easier for them to tell lies ---especially if it meant they got a financial reward at the end.
“The body clock has a great effect on us all,” says Professor Jim Horne from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University. “Most people tend to feel good around late morning and then decline in the early afternoon. But the time most of us will feel our sharpest is between 6pm and 8pm. That’s because sleepiness tends to build up throughout the day. By early evening our body clock kicks in to wake us up. One reason may be to ensure we get home safely. When our ancestors (祖先) were coming home after hunting all day, their internal clocks kicked in to get them home in one piece.”
So what effects do circadian rhythms have and what’s the best time of day to take advantage of them?

【題目】Meet Thomas Wilson. Thomas is famous all over the World. He holds the world record for sleeping in(睡過頭). One weekend, Thomas slept in for two days, three hours and fourteen minutes. It was unbelievable. No one in history had ever slept in for so long before.
Thomas was very proud of his world record. His friends were proud of him, too. Whenever Thomas walked down the street, people always came up to him and shook his hand. Thomas was a star.
The only person who wasn’t proud of Thomas’s world record was his father. Dad didn’t like it when Thomas slept in. He complained that whenever Thomas slept in, the lawns didn’t get mowed. He was worried about how high the grass was getting. Every weekend, it seemed to get higher and higher. “It’s like a jungle there.” Dad moaned(抱怨) to Thomas one day. But Thomas wasn’t worried about the grass getting higher. He had more important things on his mind—— like sleeping in.
One morning, Thomas was woken from a deep sleep by a loud roaring noise. It sounded like a wild animal pacing about under his bedroom window.
Thomas rushed over to the window and pulled the curtains back. His eyes bulged like basketballs. “What on earth…?” He gasped. There, in the middle of the backyard, was a lion! “Awesome!” cried Thomas. Suddenly, a giraffe poked its head through the window. It munched the leaves from a plant sitting by Thomas’s bed. Next, an elephant walked past the swimming pool and squirted(噴出) water all over Dad’s car! “Cool!” cheered Thomas. “Now I don’t have to wash Dad’s car today.”…(選自《新理念英語閱讀》)

【題目】Normally, we talk about the spirit of giving , and it is important to do this. But we hardly hear any talk about the spirit of receiving. Very few people know how to receive a gift kindly. Therefore, while we are receiving a gift ,we are actually rejecting it .And we turn off the flow of love by refusing to allow the other person to experience the joy of giving.
A man knew that his wife dreamed of having a fur coat , but he couldn’t afford to buy her such a coat .He loved his wife very much and he wanted to make her happy. Finally, he decided to start a fur-coat-buying project. He saved money in every way that he could .Two years later, he brought her a fur coat --- not one of the most expensive ones, but a nice fur coat. He gave it to his wife on her birthday. When she saw the coat, she said, “Oh , Bill, how could you ?You know how much we need a new sofa . ” Then after a while ,she said ,“But it is nice ,thank you .”But the husband’s feeling were hurt. Two years of love was hurt by her words---she didn’t accept a gift kindly.

【題目】閱讀短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題。
Email helps workers to communicate at any time, from any place. Email is an important tool, but it can also lead to a waste of time. How can workers make sure that email is a tool and not a time-waster? Here are some simple tips to follow. They can help you use email more efficiently (高效地) at work.
First of all, turn off the sound in your computer that tells you that you have a new email message. That “You’ve got mail!” sound is like a telephone or a doorbell. It interrupts your work. When you hear it, you will want to check your messages. And it will take you at least a few minutes to get back to work after that. Can you imagine how much time you waste because of that little sound?
Second, limit how often you check your email. Try checking it only three times a day, for example, at 9:00, 12:00 and 16:00. Also, limit the time you spend reading and answering email each time. Fifteen minutes is usually long enough.
Third, use a separate email account for work and personal life. Do not give your work address to friends or family, and do not give your personal address to people at work. If you are working on several projects at one time, use a separate email account for each one. So you can focus on the most important project.
Fourth, you won’t have to read all the email messages every time you open your email. You can look quickly at the subject lines and then decide which messages to answer right away. You can read the others later.
Finally, do not always use “reply to all” to answer email. Only send the message to people who need to read your answer. That way, you won’t fill your workmates’ inboxes with messages that they don’t need. And they won’t waste time reading them.
If you follow these simple steps, you will be a more efficient worker. Best of all, you will be able to leave the office earlier.
【1】Does email help workers to communicate at any time?
【2】How long should you spend reading and answering email each time?
【3】Why is it necessary to use a separate email account for each project?
【4】How can you decide which messages to answer right away?
【5】What is the passage mainly about?
