Learning to Accept
I learned how to accept life from my father.1, he did not teach me to learn to accept when he was strong and healthy, but when he was 2and ill.
My father was3a strong man who loved being active, but a terrible illness 4all that away. Now he can 5 walk, and he must sit quietly in a chair6 Even talking is7 One night, I went to visit him with my sisters. We started 8 about life, and I told them about one of my 9. I said that we must very often give things up as we grow —our youth, our beauty, our friends -- but it always seems that after we give something up, we get 10 in its place. Then suddenly my father spoke up. He said, “But Peter, I gave up 11 ! What did I get?” I thought and thought, but I could not think of anything to say.12, he answered his own question: “I 13the love of my family.” I looked at my sisters and saw tears in their eyes, 14 hope and thankfulness, I was also15by his words.

There were handwriting activities, story writing, English songs, role playing in English, and so on, all the teachers and students were very happy. They spoke English, sang English songs and enjoyed all the activities. Handwriting was for the students in lower grades. Although most of them couldn’t write so well, they were all very careful about it. In the show window, there were a lot of colorful handwritten papers. Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we can’t be more familiar with the fact of friendship, we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends, especially with Americans. Here are some pieces of advice on making friends with Americans:

* Visiting places Americans enjoy: parties, churches, restaurants, parks and sports clubs.

* Be willing to take the first step. Don’t wait for them to get close to you. Americans in China may not know you speak English. They may be uncomfortable if they can’t speak your language.

* Use small talks to open the conversation. Ask them where they’re from, why they come to China, etc. Remember: Be careful not to ask personal questions about age, salary and so on.

* Show an interest in their culture, their country or their job. Americans like to talk about themselves.

* Invite them to join you for dinner or just for coffee or tea. Try to set a specific (明確的)time. Americans sometimes make general invitations like “Let’s go out for a dinner sometime.” Often this is just a way to be friendly. It’s not always a real invitation.

* Don’t expect too much at first. Maybe they’re being friendly. But maybe they want to be your good friends. It will take time to tell.
