                                                   How to practice spoken English?
How can we practice our spoken English?
The first and the most important thing is to believe   1  . You should always be full of confidence or you   2
be able to improve your English. You should often encourage yourself. "Come on, don't be afraid!"
You should never lose heart and never give up.
Maybe you are afraid of losing face, but you should think since we are students and we're   3  , there's no
need to worry   4   anything. You must always be active in practice. There's no problem that your pronunciation
and intonation (語調(diào)) can't be as good   5   the native people because we are Chinese, and we don't have
chances to live in foreign countries and talk with the people there   6  . But you must know that the main way to
study English is to make ourselves understood and   7   other people. You should believe that native speakers will
not laugh at you.   8   they will encourage you. So if you are brave enough you'll certainly make a rapid progress
in your   9   English.
10   be shy or afraid! Just have a try.

Strange, but the green sea turtle (小海龜) is not that green. It's certainly not as green as a tree. In fact,
its shell (殼) is nearly black or brown. The largest hard-shelled sea turtle is between 200 and 300 pounds
heavy and a shell is between 36 and 43 inches (英寸) long. But its head is smaller than other turtles.
Little baby green sea turtles are only two inches long. As the turtle grows up, its shell keeps mostly
black while the body turns orange or brown. Young turtles like living in the sea, especially in areas with lots
of sea grasses.
Green sea turtle, like all sea turtles, are very different from land or river turtles. All sea turtles can swim
through the water faster. Instead of feet for walking, sea turtles have flippers (鰭狀肢) which are better for
swimming. The flippers aren't much good on land, however, and walking is hard for a sea turtle because
they are usually big and heavy.
Another interesting thing about a sea turtle's flippers is that they cannot be pulled into their shells. Land
turtles can pull their feet into their shells for protection, but a sea turtle can't.

Elephants are interesting animals with large ears, a long trunk, and short legs. They use their legs to stand and
walk. Unlike (不像) lions and tigers, an elephant cannot use its legs to jump or run fast. But elephants do have
something that most animals do not have — a trunk!
It is difficult for an elephant to bend (彎曲) down to reach food on the ground because of its short, fat legs.

Students often want to practice their English outside class. One of the best ways to practice your English
is to speak to a foreigner. This week's question comes from a student who is eager to start a conversation
with the foreigners he sees every day. One student asks, "Is it Okay to try to talk to foreigners I see in the
street?"
The answer is yes or no, but probably no! If you see a foreigner who looks lost, it is polite to ask him,
"May I help you?" But, otherwise, you should probably let them get on with their business. Situations,
however, do exist (存在) where it is quite all right to talk to foreigners. If a foreigner enters your school,
office, shop or restaurant, for instance (例如), feel free to ask him (for example):
     — What is your name?
     — Where do you come from?
     — What do you think of Beijing?
     — How long will you stay in Beijing?
There are also situations where it's Okay to talk to foreigners in public places. If you see a foreigner
alone in a restaurant, bar or coffee shop, it may be appropriate (合適的) to ask him or her:
     — Is this seat free?
     — Do you mind if I talk to you in English?
You can probably help them if they are new to China and if they are alone. You may be able to make them
feel more welcome.
After a few such questions, you should know whether this person wants to talk to you or not. If they ask
you similar questions, or if they give long, informative answers, you're in luck. If not, then give them their
privacy (獨處). Talking to strangers is fun if you choose the right time and place.
1. It is the best way to practice your spoken English with _____.
[     ]
A. Japanese
B. Americans
C. your classmates
D. French people

A. it is polite to stop a foreigner to talk with him in the street
B. it is polite to interrupt foreigners in a conversation
C. it is impolite to interrupt a foreigner when he or she is on business
D. it is impolite to help a foreigner find his way
3. When you first meet a foreigner, you should say "_____".
[     ]
A. Where are you going?
B. Have you eaten your dinner?
C. Can you help me with my English?
D. Nice to meet you.
4. The writer suggests us that we should _____.
[     ]
A. follow the foreigners when we meet them in the street
B. talk with foreigners in an accepted way
C. have a meal with foreigners in a restaurant
