Last month my family traveled to San Francisco, we stopped for lunch. As we walked towards the ______ of the restaurant, a man with dirty hair, jumped up from a chair outside the restaurant and opened the door for ______. He greeted us in a friendly way.

Once inside, my daughters said softly, "Mom, he smells." We watched other customers come to the ______ but many ignored* him. Seeing this rudeness truly made me ______. I decided to set a good example to my ______. When our meal arrived, I realized I had left some medicine in the car. With the windiest trip ahead, the kids needed them, ______ I excused myself from the meal and went to get them.

Just then, the "doorman" was opening the door for a couple. They ______ past him without even acknowledging* his presence. Letting them in first, I said a ______ "thank you" to him as I went out.

When I returned, we talked a bit. He said he was not allowed inside unless* he ______ food. I went back and told my family his ______. Then I asked our waitress to add one soup and sandwich. The kids looked puzzled as we had already eaten, but when I said the order was for the "doorman", they ______.

When it was time to continue our trip, I found the "doorman" enjoying his ______. Upon seeing me, he stood up and thanked me heartily. He then ______ his hand for a handshake and I accepted. I ______ noticed the tears* in his eyes - tears of gratitude. What happened next drew great surprise: I gave the "doorman" a ______. He pulled away, with tears rolling down his face.

Back in car, I fell into deep thought. While we can't choose many things in life, we can choose when to show gratitude. I said thanks to a man who had simply held open a door for me, and also said thanks for that chance to teach my children by example.

This Family Keeps Their Community Warm by Cutting Firewood for Those in Need

Washington is home to lots of trees—it is the Evergreen State, after all—— and it has lots of fireplaces and wood-burning heaters too. But what if you lived there and couldn’t cut wood or couldn’t afford to pay someone to do it? Luckily, Shane McDaniel and his twin sons, Harrison and Henry McDaniel, are happy to help. The three men cut truckloads of wood—then give it to those m need.

The idea actually started as a father-son relationship project, Shane told msn.com. “I cut wood with my dad. He just loved doing it, " said Shane. He wanted to pass along that feeling, so he and the twins spent the summer cutting. The result was a great wall of wood piled up (堆積)around their house. To buy that much it would cost about $10,000.

It was too much for the McDaniels to use themselves, and when the weather turned cold that November, Shane started thinking of others. He posted online: "IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF FIREWOOD AND CANNOT AFFORD IT, PLEASE PM [personal message] ME! ... If you know someone who BURNS WOOD, please help me and my boys make sure NO ONE GOES COLD IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, The response(反應)was immediate. One man offered to donate (捐贈)a wood-burning stove. Others raced over to Shane's house with more wood. One woman, noticing the photo of the McDaniels, started to feel warm in other ways: "I don't need the wood. But I am truly happy for what you have done! ”

Single mom Katelyn Ticer, 29, and her four-year-old daughter depended on a wood-burning stove as their only way of heat, so it was so good to receive a truckload of firewood from the McDaniels. "To get that much wood brought me to tears/' she told msn.com. “ So much stress and worry is off my shoulders. I couldn't be more thankful.

Shane is ready to help more people. “Giving is the reward”, he said. "It has nothing to do with how well it’s received; it's about how much it’s needed.”
