A Letter From Mars

Dear Earthmen,

I have enjoyed my stay on your interesting planet.

I think I understand the life on earth now and I would like to give my impressions(印象).

First of all you live in boxes. Every morning you leave your big boxes and get into smaller boxes on wheels(輪子). All these small boxes run around and around, and finally stop to rest. You leave these boxes on wheels and go to very large tall boxes.

After resting all day you get back in your little boxes and return to your big boxes. There you sit and look at every small glowing(閃閃發(fā)光的) boxes with moving pictures on the front.

There is only one thing I don’t understand. I went to a football game one day. A group of angry boys fought a little round ball. Everyone shouted but they kept fighting. They were angry, because they had been kept in boxes all day, I think.

Thank earthmen for this chance to get to know you.

Yours

【題目】What does a typical day look like for a high school student in the United States? Well everyone's is very different. I can describe my normal day in high school for you.

Our school day usually went from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. However, some days I had cheerleading(拉拉隊(duì)活動(dòng))practice or play practice at 6:30 am. If I had cheerleading practice, I would go to school early, and if I had time, I would eat breakfast at the school dining hall.

Then I would go towards my locker and my books for the first period. Each class went for about 50 minutes and we had 10 minutes to get to the next classroom. We studied everything from science to maths and Spanish to PE.

I played the flute(長(zhǎng)笛)in a band, so one of my class periods was used for that. Lunchtime would be at 12:30 and then we had some time to hang out outside or by our lockers. At the end of the day there was a seminar(研討會(huì)) period. It could be used for studying or meetings.

After school, I would cheer at a basketball game, be a lifeguard(救生員)or have speech practice. My family always tried to have dinner together at around 7 pm. I would finally start studying at around 8 or 9 pm.

So there you have it ! That's my typical day in high school.

There's always hope

I was sitting around the other morning thinking about some of my former (以前的) students. When I do that, my thoughts always turn to Vincent.

Eighteen years ago, on the first day of third grade, when I had my class write something about themselves, he just sat there. So I took him outside to see what was wrong. “You can ___ about something else; anything you want,” I offered. He turned to me and shouted, “I can’t write!” and threw his pencil.

Vincent was difficult and ______. He acted out. He threw things. He refused to work, to be quiet, to sit down.

So these many years later, I wondered what he was up to. With time on my hands, I googled him and looked him up on Facebook and before long I found him. And after a few texts we agreed to meet. And he told me his ______.

Vincent knew he was smart, but he also knew he couldn’t do what other kids did. He had to move around and talk. For him, sitting still, listening and reading, didn't ______. The more he tried to do the things on his terms, the more we forced him to do the things on our terms and the angrier he got. The angrier he got, the more trouble he got into.

In other words, we _______ him.

But he wouldn’t let me tell him that. He took full responsibility for his behavior. He remembered feeling ______ for acting out.

That _____me. Kids like Vincent are always angry about something; they hold the world responsible for the consequence(后果).

This story also had one of us turning Vincent around. But none of us did that for him. There were no excellent teachers like Annie Sullivan or Jaime Escalante. That didn’t mean we didn’t______. I remember countless conversations, trying to understand him, going to his Little League games.

It was Vincent who turned Vincent around, along with a junkie (吸毒者) house painter he worked with after failing through high school. This guy clearly scared (驚嚇) him straight; talked him into going to ______.

But it was Vincent who attended classes and got straight A’s for two years. And it was Vincent who got accepted into ten different universities, including Stanford and UW. And it was Vincent who landed a great job at a big tech company.

Vincent is completely different form 18 years ago. I couldn’t be happier for him.

And for me, the _____ is simple but powerful — there’s always hope.
