You may have heard of the famous saying, “East or west, home is the best.”
What does the word “home” mean to you? How do you say the word in French? In Chinese? In your language? Although people usually know what the word means, it sometimes has no exact translation. It's not surprising, because the idea of home is “ different from country to country and from person to person”. A home is more than a roof and four walls. It's the cooking ,eating, talking, playing and sleeping that go on inside. And at home you usually feel safe and relaxed.
Homes look different in different countries. They also have different things inside. For example, in cold northern Europe, there's a fire in the living room or kitchen and all the chairs face it, In the south, where the sun shines a lot and it's more important to keep the heat out, there are small windows and cool stone floors.
We asked some people about their homes.
How often do people move house in your country?
“ In my country many people don't stay in one place for a very long time. They often move every ten years or so.”
—Cheryl, Boston, USA

“ In Britain, even in town, there's always a garden. We have separate bedrooms and living rooms. But we don't often have balconies. The weather isn't warm enough!”

【題目】Forty years ago, I was in Grade One. One day,I was asked to go to the principal’s office(校長辦公室). I was really nervous. When I pushed the heavy door open. I found my parents were sitting in the office, too. My father walked to me,with some of my drawings in his hand. “Why do you only use a black crayon(蠟筆)when you draw?” he asked.

I said nothing. “Show me to your desk,” said my father.

So we returned to my classroom. My father pulled out my crayon box. There was only one black crayon in it. “Where are the rest of your crayons?”

I quietly explained that I’d given all the other crayons to my friends. I shared my things with others as my parents had taught me.

Then I looked at my father, then at the principal—both their faces were red. Years later, I learned that my father’s face was red because of anger and the principal was red because he was embarrassed(尷尬的). When the principal saw all my pictures, he thought that I had a deep emotional(情緒的)problem. So he had called my parents in to discuss “my problem”.

In fact, I was too shy to ask for my “shared” crayons back. I didn’t stand up for myself!

【題目】Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying: Friends are God’s way of taking care of us. But how do you find real friendship and keep it?

“The Care and Keeping of Friends” by American author Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to find friends.

Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed and take care of it to make it grow.

First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints(抱怨) and do their best to help. To make a friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.

But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to them. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you could write a letter.

Sally says there are three steps to being friends again: Tell him or her how you are feeling; say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that. The book also has advice on some small but important things like celebrating your friends’ success. Even if you haven’t had a real friend before, you will start to think of having one if you read this book. Because the book tells that friendship is the most important thing in your life.

【題目】任務(wù)型閱讀。

I once believed that a friend is a friend all the way. Now I have changed my ideas about friendships.

1. Friends of convenience(便利). They can be the people who live next door or the mothers of our children’s closest friends. Friends of convenience are good indeed. They’ll help us when we need it. They’ll look after our cats when we go on holidays. But we don’t ever get too close or tell too much. Between us, we’ll talk about being overweight but not about being sad or disappointed(失望). However, people still find it necessary to make friends like this.

2. Special-interest friends. These friendships aren’t deeply personal or emotional(感情上的). They lie in some shared interests, so we may have an office friend, a tennis friend, or even a shopping friend.

3. Historical friends. We all have a friend who knew us when…maybe we were back in the second grade of primary school, when our family lived in that two-room flat downtown. He or she was the first, the only friend we told our secrets to.

The years have gone by, and we have gone different ways. But we’re still a personal part of each other’s past. We know how we looked before our teeth were straightened(矯正), and our getting together makes us think of an earlier part of ourselves, which is important and never lost.

4. Cross-generational friends. These are friendships that from across generations(). I have in my own life a precious(珍貴的) friend, a woman of 65, who is clever, who listens well, and who means not only an ideal mother to me but also the person I’d like to be when I grow up.
