Sixteen is the age in the United States when teenagers can begin driving. It’s a special age.

There’s often a special celebration for a girl’s 16th birthday—a big party called her “sweet 16”. It is like a wedding reception(結(jié)婚晚宴).

1 They must buy a special present for the birthday girl and the girl guests find good dresses to wear. A “sweet-16” present usually costs $40 to $60. This is about $20 more than the usual-cost of a birthday present.

The party itself is not held at someone’s house. The hostess rents() a reception hall for the event. Food, cake and a DJ are provided. Around 6 o’clock, guests arrive and greet the birthday girl. Then the girl and her father have a special father-daughter dance. 2 Then there is the most important part of the “Sweet-16” party, the candle-lighting ceremony. The “sweet-16” hostess stands behind 16 candles and dedicates(獻給)each candle to her friends, family, and anything that she feels is important to her. 3. Afterwards, people sit and eat. Most guests begin leaving around 11 o’clock.

This school year, I have been to two “Sweet-16”. 4. I’ll have to wait another year before I can have my own special “Sweet-16” party. I can’t wait for it!

A.I am one of the youngest students in my grade.

B.A lot of crying and hugging goes on at this time.

C.After that, guests dance for about 30 to 45 minutes.

D.I am going to have my “sweet 16” and invite guests to my party.

E.About a month before the party, the girl’s family sends out invitations to the guests.

1根據(jù)下一句“They must buy a special present for the birthday girl and the girl guests find good dresses to wear.” About a month before the party, the girl’s family sends out invitations to the guests.故選E。

2根據(jù)前一句“Then the girl and her father have a special father-daughter dance.”和后一句“Then there is the most important part of the “Sweet-16” party, the candle-lighting ceremony.” After that, guests dance for about 30 to 45 minutes.

3根據(jù)前一句“The “sweet-16” hostess stands behind 16 candles and dedicates(獻給)each candle to her friends, family, and anything that she feels is important to her.” A lot of crying and hugging goes on at this time.

4根據(jù)前一句“This school year, I have been to two “Sweet-16”.”和后一句“I’ll have to wait another year before I can have my own special “Sweet-16” party.” I am one of the youngest students in my grade. 故選A

Many countries follow special customs when a child’s baby teeth fall out.1

For example, Koreans have the custom of throwing the fallen tooth onto the roof of a house so that a magpie (喜鵲) can take the tooth away and bring a new tooth for the child.2

3In Mexico and Spain, for example, it is thought that a mouse takes a fallen tooth away and leaves some money. But in Mongolia, it is dogs that take children’s teeth away. Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture. It is believed that the new tooth will grow strong if the baby tooth is fed to a dog, so parents in Mongolia will put their children’s fallen teeth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog.

In France and the USA, a child will put a fallen tooth under his or her pillow before going to bed. It is thought that in the early morning, when the child is still sleeping, the Tooth Fairy will take the tooth away and leave something else under the pillow. What she will leave is hard to know. 4However, in the United States, she may leave money.

A.These customs all connect baby teeth with animals.

B.It is said that in France the Tooth Fairy may leave some candies.

C.Many of these customs tell stories about animals taking the teeth.

D.This custom is also followed by some other Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam.

E.Other countries, though, have tooth customs about other animals.

【題目】 You frown (皺眉) when you are angry or upset. Your parents pat(輕拍) your head to show their love. Some players like to throw their arms forward. It seems they’re flying, after they score. Body language is everywhere. How important is it?

Body language does not use words. It is communication with the movement or position(位置) of your body. The way you stand, a hand gesture are examples of body language. And it also includes facial expressions.

According to American scientist Edward T. Hall, in a conversation between two people, 65 percent of communication is body language. In some cases you can even express yourself without any words at all. For example, your friend asks you to come on a picnic with him, you give him an “OK”gesture to say: “Yes, sounds good!” Sometimes, your words say one thing but your body language says another. You may touch your face unconsciously (無意識地) while telling a lie.

In different cultures, the same body language may mean different things. In the US, eye communication during a conversation means you are interested in what the other person is saying. But in some Asian countries, it is impolite to look straight at a person when you are talking to him or her.

People in some countries use different body language to show the same meaning. In France, people kiss cheeks (臉頰) to say hello. The Japanese prefer to bow and Maoris in New Zealand touch noses when greeting.
