The year was 1859. America and England had already fought two wars. Now, they were at peace. But one day a pig got hungry. And it nearly caused another war between the two countries.

The pig was owned by a British man who lived on a small island. The island was just of the western part of North America. Both England and the US said the island was theirs. Across the island from the British man lived some American farmers. Everyone on the island got along peacefully. But the peace ended the day the British man's pig decided to eat some of an American farmer's potatoes.

One of the American farmers shot and killed the pig. Then the pigs owner wanted $100 from the man who shot the animal. That was a lot of money, so the farmer refused to pay it. The British and Americans began to argue, and the situation got worse. The farmers asked the governor over the island at that time for help. He sent a group of soldiers to protect the farmers. The British answered by sending 2,000 soldiers. The British were on one side of the island, and the Americans were on the other. The problem that began with the pig was about to become a shooting war.

When news of the problem reached Washington and London, both leaders were surprised. Neither country wanted another war. They sent some men to try to fix the problem. After a discussion, it was decided that each country would keep a small group of soldier on the island. They would stay there until the two countries could decide who owned the island. Then the others would have to leave.

Twelve years went by. Neither side wanted to give up the island, but they knew they had to do something. They asked the leader of Germany to help decide. After nearly a year of discussion, a decision was made. America would get the island.

Finally, the Pig War was over and only one shot was fired. That was the shot that killed the pig!

The pig was owned by a British man who lived on a small island. Across the island from the British man lived some American farmers. Everyone on the island got along peacefully. But the peace ended the day the British man's pig decided to eat some of an American farmer's potatoes.

After discussion, it was decided that each country would keep a small group of soldier on the island.“討論之后決定每個(gè)國(guó)家都會(huì)在島上保留一小部分士兵”,以及這句話They would stay there until the two countries could decide who owned the island.“他們會(huì)一直待在那兒,直到兩個(gè)國(guó)家決定誰擁有這座島”可知,“他們”指的是留在島上的士兵,故應(yīng)選C。

They sent some men to try to fix the problem. After . discussion, it was decided that each country would keep a small group of soldier on the island. They would stay there until the two countries could decide who owned the island. Then the others would have to leave. 故應(yīng)選A。

But one day a pig got hungry. And it nearly caused another war between the two countries和最后一段Finally, the Pig War was over可知,這篇短文給我們講述了一場(chǎng)由豬引發(fā)的沖突。

October 16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It is used to remind people not to waste food and fight hunger (饑餓).

Food shortage (匱乏) is a big problem around the world. Right now, there are more than 1 billion (10) hungry people in the world. Many children go to sleep with hunger, and 15 million of them die because of hunger each year.

There are several reasons why there are food shortages. First, there have been more droughts (干旱) and floods (洪澇) recently. This is bad for farmers and hurts their ability to grow food. Also, a growing population makes it more difficult to feed everyone. Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. Sometimes we cook too much, or we don’t use it before it goes bad. The average (平均的) person throws away 50 kg of food every year, More than one third of all food produced goes to waste around the world each year according to the UN. That is1.3 billion tons of food being wasted.

If the wasted food was saved, it could feed lots of people. The amount of food wasted in Europe could feed 200 million people, and the food wasted in Latin America (拉丁美洲) could feed 300 million people.

As teenagers, we should think twice next time we want to throw away extra (額外的) food on our own plate. By cutting down on food waste, we could also help put food on the empty plates of some hungry children.

1The main purpose (目標(biāo)) of World Food Day is to remind people ________.

A. not to waste food and fight hungerB. to produce more food

C. to control the growing populationD. not to eat much

B. A growing population.

C. That farmers don’t have the ability to grow food.

D. That most people waste.

4We can help hungry people by ________.

A. sleeping with hunger

B. changing the weather

C. cutting down on food waste

D. only eating food you like

5From the passage, we know that ________.

A. the food wasted in Latin America is more than that in Europe

C. the wasted food can feed all the hungry people around the world

Almost every day, we discuss the topic of health, especially for kids. But what is health?

"Health" means eating well, getting enough exercise, and having a healthy weight. Let's read the following rules. They can help you stay healthy.

▲Eat a variety of food, especially fruits and vegetables. We all know that eating fruits and vegetables can help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite food. Remember that we can only get the nutrition(營(yíng)養(yǎng))we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruits and vegetables.

▲ Drink water and milk most often. Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty of calcium(鈣)to grow strong bones, and milk is rich in it. Every day, you should drink at least three cups of milk, when you are 9 years old or older. You should also try to have less sugary drinks, like soda and coca. They include a lot of sugar. Sugar only includes calories(熱量), not important nutrition.

▲ Listen to your body. When you are eating, notice how your body feels. When your stomach feels comfortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes you feel uncomfortable. If you do it too often, it can make unhealthy and fat.

▲ Limit screen time. What's screen time? It's the amount of time you spend watching TV, movies and playing computer games. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time you spend playing sports, like basketball, and doing other activities like riding and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.

As we all know, different people have different pronunciations of the same word. Standard(標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的) pronunciation is important for English speaking as well as for listening.
