【題目】Song of the Parting Son (游子吟)

The thread in mother’s hand -

A gown for parting son,

Sewn stitch by stitch, alas!

For fear his return be delayed.

Such kindness of warm sun

Can’t be repaid by grass.

Song of the Parting Son may be the most popular Chinese poem about a mother’s love. It describes a common matter in daily life — a mother making clothes for her son. Nearly every mother has sewn (縫補) something for their child and many sons and daughters are familiar with this. For this reason, this short poem has touched many people’s hearts.

In the last two lines, the poet uses a pair of metaphors (比喻). Meng compares the mother to the warm sun and the child to grass. This shows how great a mother’s love can be and what little a child can do to repay his or her mother.

Poet Meng Jiao (751-814) lived in poverty (貧困) all his life. He didn’t become a low-level official until he was in his 50s. Only a few years later, he resigned (辭去) from his official post because of the death of his mother. 【題目】閱讀表達

Most new babies were born in the developing countries. These countries are found in Africa, South America and parts of Asia. In the developed countries of Europe and North America, the population is growing very slowly. This is because women in these countries have, on average (平均), only one or two children. In the developing countries, many women have five or more children. In 1950, about one quarter of the world’s population lived in the developed countries. By 2050, these countries will be home to only about one tenth of the world’s people.

In the developing countries, more than one billion people are still living below the poverty(貧困) line. These people do not have enough food to eat and they live in poor housing conditions. Children get little time at school and suffer (遭受痛苦) from many kinds of diseases.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the world’s population was around six billion. The U.N. has said that the world’s population will level off (平穩(wěn)下降) at 12.5 billion by the year 2100. Other groups think the world’s population will continue to grow, reaching 14 billion before it becomes stable (穩(wěn)定的), or even falls.

1Is the population growing very slowly in developed countries?

________________________________________________

2In 1950, what percent of the world’s population lived in developed countries?
