【題目】

In 2013 alone at least 20,000 African elephants were killed for their teeth. In South Africa over the last two years more than 2,200 rhinos were killed for their horns. These numbers are alarming, because current rates of illegal hunting are faster than birth rates, which could lead to extinction for these ecologically important creatures in their environment. Indeed, some elephant and rhino populations are on track to be locally extinct within the next decade.

If you are reading this, you may already be aware of these facts. But you might not know that wildlife trafficking (走私) not only threatens the existence of elephants and rhinos but is also leading to extinction of other species, such as tigers, tortoises, sea turtles — and the world’s most trafficked mammal(哺乳動(dòng)物) — pangolins.

Pangolins are the only mammals that are entirely covered in tough scales(), which makes them look very strong. But actually they are endangered mammals. There are eight different kinds of pangolins, four in Asia and four in Africa, and all are threatened with extinction. Although pangolins are protected throughout most of the countries where they live, high demand in East Asia, where the delicious pangolin meat is considered a delicacy and where their scales are used in traditional medicines, is driving an illegal trade in both live animals and pangolin parts. The number of pangolin trafficking is shocking. Experts believe that over the last 10 years more than 1 million pangolins were taken from the wild. It is estimated that between 40,000 and 81,250 pangolins were killed for the illegal trade in 2013 alone.

In February, the United States released a plan to deal with wildlife trafficking, which lays out the steps we will take to fight the illegal trade in wildlife, including pangolins. We are strengthening the carrying out of the plan, building international cooperation and contribution to protect wildlife, raising awareness to drive down the demand that is fuelling the illegal trade.

Get involved and remember World Wildlife Day (March 3) by spreading the plan. Use social media and tell everyone that now is the time to get serious about wildlife crime and end the demand that threatens species, big and small, from the huge elephant to the shy pangolin.

1How many rhinos were killed in South Africa during the last two years?

A. More than 81,250. B. More than 20,000.

C. More than 2,200. D. More than 40,000.

2How many kinds of pangolins are there in Asia?

A. Ten. B. Four. C. Six. D. Eight.

3What does the phrase ‘carrying out’ mean in the fourth paragraph?

A. Putting the plan into effect. B. Moving the plan to a place.

C. Making a new plan. D. Taking the plan with you.

4What does the writer want us to know after reading the passage?

A. Protecting wild animals is our duty.

B. Something about World Wildlife Day.

C. Something about illegal trade in East Asia.

D. Wild animals are in danger and we must get involved.

【題目】The chart shows the challenges people face when they settle in a new country and how the challenges vary according to people's ages.

The most challenging part for young people aged 18 to 34 is making new friends,a problem experienced by 46% of the people in this age group. However, only 36% of 35~54-year-old people find it hard to make friends, and even fewer people over 55(23%) have this problem.

55% of the people in the oldest age group find learning the local language is the biggest obstacle(障礙) when settling. In comparison, the youngest age group finds that easier, and the percentage of young people who have problems learning the local language is much lower, only 24%.

In contrast to their language-learning difficulties, only 22% of the people in the oldest age group have trouble finding accommodation(住所).However, this is a significant problem for the other two age groups.

In general, all age groups experience the same problems to some extent, but people over the age of 55 report that they face fewer challenges settling in a new country than the younger respondents(調(diào)查對(duì)象).

【題目】

A company says it has completed the first 3D-printed home recently. The home was shown to reporters and visitors at a music festival.

The building company has developed large 3D- printers that build homes with mortar, a hard and strong

material. It uses robotics, computer programs and advanced materials to make houses.

Jason Ballard is the company's chief engineer. "So I'm standing in front of the first 3D-printed home in America. This house was actually printed in high winds, blowing dust and rain." It is important for the printing programmes to operate in bad weather conditions, such as weather disasters. The goal is to print homes in developing countries. So the printer has to be light enough to move from one property to the next.

Ballard imagines that someday, many 3D-printers will operate around the world to make homes. "It's actually a lot more simple to build a printer than it is to build a house," he said. "We ran this printer at about a quarter speed to print this house, and completed it in about 48 hours of print time."

The company developed this technology not to make money but to help provide a quick, cheap housing solution for the millions of people who need it most. There are about a billion people that don't have one of life's most basic human needs, and that's safe shelter.

Ballard says his company already works on housing needs with poor families in different areas. But he says that to really make a difference, the program will need to be greatly improved. He added that since the 3D-printing process is so much faster than traditional homebuilding, a whole community could be built in just a few months. He believes over time, people can get the new home below $4,000 with the help of 3D-printers.

2What is the meaning of the underlined word property in Paragraph 3?

A. land for farming B. land for building houses

C. land for raising animals D. land for running companies

3It will take about hours to print a house if the printer is at its full speed.

A. 12 B. 24 C. 36 D. 48

4What is the best title for this passage?

A. The Future of 3D-printing B. The History of 3D-printing

C. The New Use of 3D-printing D. The Instructions of 3D-printing
