The widespread number of food scandals(丑聞)in China is making many people pause before they put their chopsticks in their mouths. They are wondering if the food they are eating is clean, healthy and nutritious(營養(yǎng)) or does it contain(包含) something harmful that will cause disease?
Most of the food we eat today is processed food(加工食品).That means the foods we buy in stores and supermarkets, especially packaged foods, are prepared in factories.Chemicals are added to the foods in these factories to make them look better, taste better and last longer on the shelf. The chemicals are supposed to be harmless and there are laws that regulate(控制) which chemicals can and cannot be used.Unfortunately, some producers do not obey the laws.
A producer of steamed buns(饅頭)in Zhejiang Province was recently discovered to be breaking the law.He was adding yellow dye and other banned chemicals to the buns.He was also taking old buns and using them to make new buns. Most of the buns were sold to schools and eaten by students…like you!
Why did he do it? Why did he break the law and endanger people’s health? The answer is simple:he wanted to make more money. It was a moral failing, and this is at the heart of the food scandals in China.Too many people focus on making money and not on the effects their actions can have on others.

Playing is serious business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.
Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through playing. They use their five senses to get to know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight.
When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions. Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.
Crayons, paints and Ply-Doh(彩色塑泥)are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.
Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. __*___. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

A ban on smoking in most public places goes into effect(效果) on Sunday in China - home to a third of the world's smokers. That means around 300 million smokers will no longer be allowed to light their cigarettes in the "enclosed public places." These include hotels, restaurants, theaters and public transport waiting rooms. The ban does not cover offices or factories.
The campaign is aimed at controlling(控制) the number of deaths from smoking-related illnesses, running at a million a year. According to the World Health Organization, more than 3,000 people die every day in China because of smoking. Health experts also hope it will help Chinese to raise the knowledge of the dangers of smoking.
But the new rules have been criticized because they do not include punishments(處罰) for those who choose not to obey them. Most people worry that Chinese smoking ban may have little effect.
Business owners often hate rules that force(強(qiáng)迫) them to ban smoking on their restaurants, bar, cafe..., because many customers(顧客) do not like the rules and complain. Often you find people smoking at the next table while you are eating your meal or having a drink in a bar.
It appears that many Chinese people don’t know the dangers of smoking. Research suggests only one in four knows the harm(害處) cigarettes or second-hand smoke can cause.

More and more people around the world are joining in dangerous sports. Some people climbed the highest mountains; some traveled into unknown parts of the world; some sailed small boats across the largest sea. Now some people begin to look for new excitement.
Bungee jumping (蹦極) and motorcycle racing (摩托車賽) are quite dangerous sports. Bungee jumping only lasts a few minutes or even seconds. You jump from a high place, 200 meters above the ground, and there is a rubber band (橡膠帶子) tied to your legs. When you jump down, the rubber band pulls you up. About 2,000,000 people around the world have tried bungee jumping.

The keys to reaching or staying at a healthy weight are regular exercise and good eating habits. Teens should get 60 minutes or more of physical activity a day. Note the word “activity”. As long as you’re getting your body moving, it doesn’t have to mean doing difficult exercise or going to the sports hall every day. All that matters is that each week you get the right balance of activity, including aerobics (有氧運(yùn)動(dòng)), strength building, and flexibility (柔韌) exercise. Make exercise a habit by arranging some time every day.
On days when you have soccer practice or an aerobics class, you may have no trouble exercising for an hour or more. But most of us are busy, and 60 minutes a day for exercise seems like a lot of time. The good news is that it’s OK to divide it into shorter exercise breaks throughout the day.
Just as you might have a healthy snack to stop yourself from getting hungry, exercise snacks can keep energy levels high. So get up 15 minutes early and do some stretching (伸展) activity. Walk fast or run slowly for 15 minutes after lunch. Do the same thing after school — or walk or bike home. Add to that taking the stairs, PE class, and walking between classes during the day, and you’ve probably reached your 60 minutes.
Here are five simple ways to make an exercise lifestyle change:
【小題1】The writer thinks many people probably misunderstand the word“activity” to be “_______”.
A.physical activity | B.body movement |
C.sports hall exercise | D.outdoor exercise |
A.the time spent on exercise |
B.the intensity of activity |
C.the difficulty of exercise |
D.the right balance of activity |
A.exercising for a long time is bad for people’s health |
B.it has the same effect as soccer practice |
C.people usually haven’t much time to exercise |
D.no one can spare lots of time to exercise |
A.Regular exercise. | B.School exercise. |
C.Indoor exercise. | D.Difficult exercise |

Anger(生氣) is a kind of feeling. Many things can make you angry. When your teacher gives you too much homework, when your team loses an important game, when a friend borrows your favorite thing and then breaks it, you may get really angry.
Usually, your body will tell you when you are angry. For example, you breathe faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit someone, but sometimes, you hide your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a headache or your stomach may hurt.
In fact, it’s not good to hide your anger, and it’s normal for you to get angry sometimes. But anger must be let out in the right way, without hurting others or yourself.
When you get angry, you can talk about it with other people. It’s helpful to talk about your anger with an adult, such as parents, a teacher, etc. When you talk about anger, those bad feelings can start to go away.
