【題目】 Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population(人口) is left-handed.

Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.

No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness, he/ she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.

Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no more think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.

1How many people in the world are left-handed now?

A.Less than one sixth.B.More than a half.

C.About 40%.D.The passage doesn’t tell us.

2According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A.No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed.

B.Left-handedness is cleverer than right-handedness.

C.Today children are not made to use their right hands only.

D.Scientists think there must be some reason why people become left-handed.

3The best title for this passage is _______

A.Scientists’ New InventionsB.Left-handed People

C.Which HandD.Different Brains, Different Hand

【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,選擇最佳答案。Do as the Romans Do
The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I don't want to, because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one's food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American's dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American is fed with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I'll take some diet, Pepsi-Cola(百事可樂)if you have it. ”That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you had better remember the famous saying: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
(1)From the passage, we can know that the Chinese are usually ________ to the guests.
A.very hot
B.rude
C.impolite
D.cold
(2)When a foreigner has dinner with a Chinese host, he often feels _______.
A.pleasant
B.uncomfortable
C.satisfied
D.happy
(3)Why does a Chinese often refuse the offer of food or drink at a dinner party?
A.He has had enough.
B.He is shy.
C.He is afraid that others will laugh at him.
D.He thinks it's polite to do that.
(4)When an American wants something to eat or drink at a dinner, he will _______.
A.ask for it boldly
B.refuse the offer
C.ask for it directly
D.express himself indirectly
(5)“When in Rome, do as the Romans do “means “________”.
A.When you got to Rome, you should act as the Romans do
B.When you stay in Rome, you should do as the Romans do
C.When you are in a new country, you should do as the locals do
D.Romans can be an example for you

【題目】 Have you ever heard the old saying, “Never judge a book by its cover”?This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence(智力)of others.

Some people have minds that stand out only in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in creative writing may find himself speechless in the presence of a pretty girl. He fumbles for (摸索)words and talks in a halting (躊躇的)manner. But don’t make the mistake of thinking him stupid. With a pen and paper, he can express himself eloquently (雄辯地,有說服力地).

Other people may fool you into overestimating (過高估計)their intelligence by putting up a good front(舉止). A student who listens attentively and takes notes is bound to make a favorable impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may score near the bottom of the class.

It all boils down to this—you can’t judge someone by appearances. The only way to determine a person’s intelligence is to get to know him. Then you can observe(觀察) how he reacts to different situations. The more situations you observe, the more accurate(正確的) your judgement is likely to be.

1The main idea of this passage is .

A.don’t judge a book by its cover

B.don’t judge a person’s intelligence by appearances

C.don’t make the mistakes of thinking the young man stupid

D.people may fool you by putting up a good front

2The young man mentioned in the passage .

A.was stupidB.was a good student

C.was a talented writerD.was successful with girls

3According to the passage, true knowledge of a person’s intelligence comes from .

C.how he behaves in different situationsD.his outward appearance

4The passage suggests that in judging a person’s intelligence we should .

C.rely on intuition (直覺)D.give him an IQ test

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
One day a man found a cocoon(蠶) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly, a small opening appeared and the butterfly made its great effort(努力) to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.(那個蛹好象忘記了它該怎樣做, 也好象停止了掙扎).
So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly would come out easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(爬) around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.
The man was in his kindness, but he didn't understand the nature rules. Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid(液體) from its body must be forced into its wings, and then would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle(拼搏) to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been, we could never fly.
(1)What was the butterfly doing at the beginning of the story?
A.It was trying to make a cocoon for it self.
B.It was crawling around quietly on the ground.
C.It was flying among the trees in the forest.
D.It was struggling to get out of its cocoon.
(2)The man cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon in order to __________.
A.take the butterfly home
B.help the butterfly come out easily
C.kill the butterfly
D.stop the butterfly growing bigger
(3)What do you think of the man?
A.Patient but cruel
B.Careful and wise
C.Kind but unwise
D.Brave and funny
(4)What does the last paragraph (段落) tell us?
A.Struggles are sometimes necessary in our life.
B.Nothing is difficult if we put our heart into it.
C.Every good deed will come back with good result.
D.The greatest happiness in the world is to help others.
(5)What is the best title of the story?
A.The Love for the Cocoon.
B.The Joy of Helping Each Other.
C.The Lesson of the Cocoon.
D.The Expectation (期待) for the Butterfly.
