On March 14, one of science’s brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.
Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He educated the world with his knowledge that the universe (宇宙) began with the Big Bang (大爆炸) and will end in black holes. His studies are of great help for later researches. He also wrote books to help common people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time, which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world, according to CNN.
Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone who had a strong mind and bravely smiled in face of difficulty.
When Hawking was 21, he developed a serious illness that stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and “speak” by using a computerized voice. But THIS didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. “If one is physically disabled, he cannot afford to be disabled in mind as well,” he once said.
Hawking traveled the world to attend different science meetings, visiting many places, including Antarctica (南極洲). He was also a fan of pop culture and appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory.
He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon; when he was 65, he took part in a special flight to experience weightlessness just like in space. He hoped to travel into space one day.
“At first, I felt it was very unfair — why should this happen to me,” Hawking wrote in his book. “But now, 50 years later, I can be quietly pleased with my life.” Now, the great scientist may no longer be with us, but he will continue to live in our hearts now and in the future. As he once said himself, “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”

Now people depend more on the Internet to store information. Do people remember less? If you know your computer will store information, why do you put it in your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what and how we remember.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow did some experiments(實(shí)驗(yàn)). She and her team wanted to know if the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts and then stored them into a computer. The first group of people were told that the computer had stored the information. But the second group didn’t know that. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a certain computer folder(文件夾). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder’s location(位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Instead, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(交互記憶)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories, that is, people are learning how to organize a great deal of information so that they are able to find it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

A.the way we use the Internet
B.the information was stored in the computer
C.the information which was asked to remember
D.the memory which is being changed by the Internet

A.the first group remembered the information better
B.Sparrow gave people 40 unimportant numbers to remember
C.the second group did their best to remember the information
D.the two groups of people knew the computer had stored the information
【3】According to transactive memory, people always_____________ .
A.remember the facts easily
B.keep the information in mind
C.remember how to find the information
D.store the information on the Internet easily
【4】What does the story mainly talk about?
A.The Internet makes us less intelligent.
