Rita stepped into the cool, moving water. She pushed a black inner tube in front of her. She had a worried look on her face because she had never floated down a river before.
“Let me hold your tube while you climb on,” said her father. He smiled at her. “There’s not a cloud in the sky. It’s a great day to be in the river, isn’t it?”
Rita looked out across the water. People were floating by on tubes. Some talked and laughed as they floated easily down the river. Others leaned back with hats pulled over their faces. None of them looked terrified.
“We’ll stay together,” said Rita’s father. “I’ll hold on to your rope.”
“Will we go very fast?” Rita asked.
“No,” said Dad. “We’ll move slowly for a while, and then it will get a little faster near the river’s bend. Don’t worry, Rita. You’ll be fine.”
Rita looked at her tube. It gently moved up and down in the water. She saw a girl of her own age float by. The girl seemed to be having fun. Suddenly Rita’s worries disappeared.

Once, there was a beautiful girl who didn’t like herself, because she was blind, she couldn’t see anything.
In fact, the girl loved nobody except her boyfriend, for he was always ready to help her. She used to tell her boyfriend, “If I could see the world, I would marry you.”
One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to the girl. When the bandages came off,she was able to see   everything, including her boyfriend for the first time. He asked her, “Now that you can see the world, will you   marry me?” The girl looked at her boyfriend and was greatly surprised to see that he was blind, too. So, this is how the human brain often works when our situation changes. Only a very few remember what life was like before. And we often ask for more than we need. Life is a gift. Life is important to all of us. So we must respect our lives. When you want to run across the street to catch the bus, stop to think about it. If you do, you’ll have to pay a fine (罰款) or get hurt.
Traffic accidents killed more than 104,000 people in China last year. Chinese cities have more cars than ever. Drivers and pedestrians (行人) must work together to make the streets safer.
New traffic laws say that if people cross the street when the light is red, they can be fined as much as 50 yuan. The law has new rules for drivers and pedestrians. Drivers have to slow down when they are close to crosswalks. If people are in a crosswalk, cars must stop to let them walk.
There are rules for bus drivers, too. If bus drivers smoke, drink or make phone calls while driving, they can be fined. Buses that carry too many people are also against the law.
Pedestrians will have to walk more safely under the new law. They must cross streets at crosswalks. Also, they shouldn’t climb over the fences (柵欄) along streets.
Do you ride a bike to school? It’s not a good idea to carry classmates on the back. You could be fined 50 yuan. And stay in the bike lane (車道) when you’re riding. The big roads are for cars and buses.
Do you like to ride your uncle’s motorbike? When you put on your helmet (頭盔), ask him to put one on, too. “People on motorbikes must wear helmets”, the new law says. If they don’t, they’ll have to pay 200 yuan. When you ride in cars, don’t forget to put on your seat belt, even if you’re going for a short taxi ride. It could save your life.
If you see a hit-and-run (肇事逃逸), tell the police. They may give you a reward (獎賞).
