At weekends he always does the same things. On Saturday he washes his car and on Sunday he takes his family to a village(村莊) far from his house. His uncle and aunt live there, so Jack goes to see them every week. They have a big farm and only one worker to help them, so they are usually very busy. Jack often asks his family to help them. American and British people use different greetings. In the USA the commonest greeting is “Hi”. In Britain it is “Hello!” or “How are you?” “Hi!” is creeping(不知不覺地進入)into British, too. When they are introduced to someone, the Americans say, “Glad to know you. ” The British say, “How do you do?” or “Pleased to meet you. ” When Americans say “Good-bye”, they nearly always add, “Have a good day. ” or “Have a good trip. ” etc. to friends and strangers alike. Britons are already beginning to use “Have a good day. ”
The British usually use “got” in the sense of “have”. The Americans hardly ever do. AmE: Do you have a car, room, etc. ? Yes, I do. BrE: Have you got a car, room, etc. ? Yes, I have.
There are a number of differences between American and British English in the spelling of words, e. g. check(US)/cheque(UK). Many American words ending in “or”, e. g. honor, labor are spelt in British English with an “our,” e. g. honour, labour. Many verbs in American English with “ize” or “izing” forms, e. g. organize, realizing are spelt in BrE with “ise” or “ising”, e. g. organise, realising. In American English, “practice” is used both for the verb and noun. In BrE, the verb is spelt “practise”, and the noun “practice. ” In AmE, one writes “traveler,” while in BrE, one writes “traveller”.
It was once predicted that British and American English would become separate (各自的)languages finally. But the opposite has happened. The links(聯(lián)系)between the two countries are so strong that linguistically(語言上),and probably culturally(文化上)too, they are closer together than ever before.

Once a young man named Steve sold fruits at the market each day in town. He always tried to be the first seller to arrive there. He believed that the earlier he got to the market, the more he could sell. This drove other sellers crazy, and they also came to the market earlier and earlier.
To get up even earlier, Steve thought that if he ate breakfast at night, he could get to the market earlier. So after he ate dinner, he ate his breakfast. He went to bed very full, but he knew it was for a good cause.
Morning came and Steve was surprised to see that there were already many people there. He realized that his plan had failed, so he decided to get dressed at night that he could save time in the morning. But in the morning some sellers were there before him again.
Steve decided to spend the night at the marketplace. He carried his bed to town. That night, he lay on his bed and watched the night sky. The moon was full and he was very excited. It was hard for him to sleep. When morning came, Steve was so sleepy and tired that he couldn’t get up, so he slept the whole day as the buyers came and left around him.
