It took over 100 years for Mary Elizabeth bower to receive the honor. Yet this unknown black woman played a part in the winning of the civil war. She was a spy(間諜) for the north and worked in the home of Jefferson davis, the president of the South. She could't read or write, still, she was able to remember reports she came across. She would then pass the reports along at secret meetings with another woman spy. Then the woman would send the reports to general Grant. Mary's life was in great danger every day.
