Humans have always dreamed of finding a way to leave traffic jams(交通堵塞)behindWell, dream no longerThe flying car and pod car(豆莢車)can help cut down on traffic jams

The world’s“first flying car”, called the Terrafugia Transition, has made its first flight in the skies of the USIt can fly 640 km through the air without adding more gas, the car maker, Terrafugia Inc, says

As a light airplane, it is not easy for the Terrafugia Transition to fly in poor weatherHowever, it has the advantage of being able to continue the journey by road if conditions take a turn for the worse

This is the first proven flying car with foldable wingsThese allow it to perfectly transfer from air to road

However, there are a few problemsThe car/plane, which is expected to go on sale as early as 2011, will cost about 194, 000(1.33 million yuan)Drivers will also need a driver’s and pilot’s license

For those afraid of heights, or who don’t want to fly, the pod car is a great way to travelImagine using a button to stop the small pod-shape carThe doors open, you climb into the passenger seat, and enter your personal numberMinutes later, the doors slide open and you have reached the place where you’re going

Cities around the world are looking into pod-car systems, as pod cars do not need human driversThey are designed for one person or small groups traveling togetherPassengers simply type their place into the pod car’s computer and the pod car takes them directly there

Because pod cars do not make unnecessary stops and use electricity, they save a lot of energy and do not pollute the airPod cars also provide passengers with faster service and more privacy than a subway or bus

While flying cars and pod cars may be a dream available to a few, many humans are still dreaming bigger dreams, such as teleportation(瞬間位移術(shù))It is most widely found in works of science fiction

Telep ortation is a method of transportation, in which, objects or information are dematerialized(使消失), and then recreated in another placeMaybe one day, teleportation could become a reality and people could avoid traffic jams for ever!

How to say hello in Japanese depends on when you say it.This is very much like different greetings used in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture, it also depends on whether you are on the phone or meeting somebody or whether you are close to the person you are greeting. We seldom greet them with “good morning” or “Good evening”.A “Hi” is enough.

Although the most popular and most well-known translation for “Hello” is still “Konnichiwa”, it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese.Perhaps it is not the most suitable work for it.Actually, the correct greeting in English for “Konnichiwa” is “Good day” or “Good noon”, and I am sure you wouldn't like greeting people with a “Good day” at any time, and neither do Japanese like saying “Konnichiwa” when they want to say “Hello”.

So what to do? Let's do it the way the Japanese do.Use “Ohaiyo Gonzaimasu” for “Good morning”, “Konnichiwa” when it's noon and “Konbanwa” to greet somebody in the afternoon.Things differ when you are on the phone.Just say “Moshi, Moshi”, which is actually similar to saying “Hello” over the phone, because one hardly ever uses “Good morning” or “Good afternoon or “Good evening” right after picking up the phone. It is invariably the sweet old “Hello”.

Next time, I'll tell something about my life in Japan.

(1)

Look at your watch for just one minute. During that time in 1981, 239 babies were born in the world. Perhaps you think that isn’t much. In the next hour, over 14,000 more babies will be born on the earth. Just think how many more babies there will be born in one year. If this goes hour after hour, what will happen in a hundred years?

The population problem may be the greatest one of the world today. Two thousand years ago, there were only 250 million people on the earth. Four hundred years ago, the number was over 500 million. The population may be 8,000 million by the year 2000.

In China, the population problem is quite great, too. The Party’s leaders are paying much attention to it, but lots of people don’t think so. They like to do what they want. Some love more children. Some wish to have both son and daughter. Other would like to have not only daughters but also sons. Haven’t they ever thought the population problem? My respecting teacher

I always thought that a man who was wise (睿智的) and good would become rich, but this year I have learned that this is not always true. I learned this from my teacher. He is both wise and good, but is not rich at all, for being a teacher, he doesn't have a good income. He may be able to get more money if he gives up teaching for business. But he is so proud of being a teacher that he takes pleasure in helping young people. He stays at school from morning till late afternoon and works very hard. He always smiles at us when we go to ask him for help. He is kinder to us than anyone whom I've ever known. I think it must be easier to learn history or maths than to learn how to become such a man. He scolds (責(zé)備) us when we do something wrong, but it teaches us to try to do better. We all wish to study with him as long as possible, but that may be impossible. Some of us may become doctors, some be come businessmen, some become engineers, some become writers, but we all want one thing very much to become men like our teacher.

I wonder if there is any girl or boy who does not like to see a rainbow (彩虹) in the sky. It is so beautiful.

There is a story, saying that whenever you see a rainbow you should run at once to the place where it touches the ground, and there you would find a pot of gold. Of course it is not true. Neither you could find the pot of gold, nor could you ever find its end. No matter how far you run, it always seems far away.

A rainbow is not a thing that we can feel with our hands as we can feel a flower. It is only the effect (結(jié)果) for light shining on raindrops. The raindrops catch the sunlight and break it up into all the wonderful colours which we see.

It is called a rainbow perhaps because it is made up of raindrops and looks like a bow (弓).

That is why we can never see a rainbow in a clear sky. We see rainbows only when there is rain in the air and the sun is shining brightly through the clouds. Every rainbow has many colours in the same order. The first or the top colour is always red, next comes orange, then green, and last of all blue. A rainbow is indeed one of the wonders of nature.

(1) Children like rainbows because ________ .

[ ]

A. they are beautiful

B. they are like bows

C. they can find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow

D. they are good to crops

(2) We can not feel ________ with our hands.

[ ]

A. gold

B. a flower

C. a rainbow

D. a raindrop

(3) We can see a rainbow ________ .

[ ]

A. when it is raining heavily

B. when it is snowing

C. in a clear sky

D. when it becomes fine immediately after raining

(4) Which of the following is not right?

[ ]

A. A rainbow is always far away from us.

B. A rainbow is the effect of light shining on raindrops.

C. A rainbow is the product of human beings.

D. A rainbow is one of the wonders of nature.

(5) The first colour of a rainbow is always ________ .
