On the way back from work every evening, more often than not there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway (快車道). He looked to be in his late 40s but was probably a lot younger. He had shoulder length straight black hair and a short beard.
Every day after work I would remember to gather any spare change, and put it aside to give to him if I saw him. A feeling of joy would come over me every time I saw him, while coming off the ramp (坡道). So did he. Sometimes the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day. His answer would always be the same, “I’m blessed!”
Then one day I was called into my boss’s office and was told that I was being laid off. For the rest of that day all I could think of was “how am I going to provide for my kids as a mother, how am I going to pay rent?”
Needless to say that on my way home that day I was very sad and upset. I didn’t remember to look for my spare change and keep it ready like I usually did. Yet there he was as always, as I turned the ramp. He set his eyes on me, while still smiling and waving at others as usual.
While I was waiting for the red light to turn, he strolled (閑逛) over to my car. He had a big smile. He looked at me straight in the eyes and said, “Today I will give you a dollar.” He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a dollar bill.
You see that day he taught me a valuable lesson more than a dollar bill. No matter what material things are taken from you, no one can take away your choice to be joyful. Every time I’m faced with challenges, I think of the homeless man’s valuable lesson and remember that I am blessed.

Values join us together and set us apart. Today, our society has a terrible lack(缺乏) of values. Here are some social values that everyone needs.
Respect
Respect means to respect others in everyday life. Even if you are against a person, it is important to have respect. It is this respect that makes us human. Without respect, we become animals. We need to respect our friends for our friendship. We even need to respect our enemies because they help us to grow up and become stronger. Respect is one of the crucial values in a relationship.
Love
Love is everything. With love in our hearts, we feel no need to hurt another. With love in our hearts, we will pay more attention to the similarities in opinions rather than the disagreement. If we want others to be good to us, we need to be good to them. After all, we give love to get love, right?
Loyalty
People often ignore (忽視) the meaning and importance of loyalty. Loyalty is necessary for people to believe in each other. In no matter what kind of friendship, we need to believe in each other so that we can work together towards the same goal.

One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet viewing of the wonderful paintings.
A young couple were viewing the paintings in front of me and chatting with each other without stop. I watched them for a moment and noticed the man’s wife was doing all the talking. I was surprised to see that the man was so patient and could stand his wife’s words, but I still moved on.
I met them several times when I moved through the different rooms of art. Each time I heard she continued talking about the paintings, I moved away quickly.
I was buying some gifts in the museum shop when the couple came near to the gate. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out something brown. He turned it into a long stick and then tapped(輕敲) his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.
“He’s a brave man,” a clerk beside me said. “Most of us would give up if we became blind at such a young age. During his treatment, he made a promise that his life wouldn’t change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked. “He can’t see.”
“Can’t see? You’re wrong. He sees a lot , more than you or I do.” The clerk said, “His wife describes each painting, so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience(耐心), courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person who was blind and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to make his life different. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away holding each other’s hands.

There was a lovely vegetable patch (菜園). A large tree grew there. Both the patch and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride of the gardener. But no one knew that the vegetables and the tree couldn’t stand each other. The vegetables hated the tree’s shadow (陰影), because it left them only just enough light to live. The tree, on the other hand, hated the vegetables because they drank nearly all the water, leaving him just enough to live.
The situation became so serious that the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would die. The tree answered back by not protecting the vegetables from the hot sun, so they began to dry up. Soon the vegetables were really weak, and the tree was drying up.
The gardener wondered why and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables realized that it was better to help each other. They learned how to live in harmony with those around them. So they decided to work together, using both the shade and the water to grow well. It’s good to make mistakes, and here is why.
First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you make yourself stronger? The simple answer is “You can’t.” Look around you. With very few exceptions(例外), either everything you see in your world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new.
Another good thing about mistakes is this: When you are making mistakes, you are learning.Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work.
Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why? Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some numbers of things before you succeed.Every time you make a mistake, you eliminate one of those things and are one step closer. But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead without considering the consequences(后果) of a mistake. However, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits(限度) so that in the event that it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, you will be in a normal place to try again.
We all have limited time and money so don’t blow them all on one problem. Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and deal with these resources(資源) properly so you can learn, make corrections, and try it again. If you accept and use your mistakes in this way ,you can make great progress in your business and your career.
There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.”
So go ahead and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed.
【小題1】From the second paragraph, we can know that _______.
A.mistakes are unnecessary for development |
B.we are afraid of trying new thing |
C.it’s common for people to make mistakes |
D.mistakes are better than not trying |
A.study | B.remove | C.a(chǎn)ccept | D.solve |
A.not making the same mistakes |
B.a(chǎn)ccepting the punishment willingly |
C.taking consequences into consideration |
D.trying things out one by one |
A.Never mind, I can always try again. |
B.I’d better stay out of trouble. |
C.Ok! Now I can learn something. |

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.
Take the taxi driver as an example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high- class Bens with a fare (車費(fèi)) of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to take you to any place you want to, say that you have some business to attend to (料理), and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver will not be anxious.
The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests (客人), but also serve outside eaters. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining room to have their meals. The only thing they need to do is to show their cards to the waiter. You can easily use any old room card to take a couple of friends to eat dinner without paying.
The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. But to my surprise, they can remember everything so clearly that the workers only need to say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid by their boss.
With so many loopholes (漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven (天堂) to those who love to take “small advantages”. But the strange thing is: all the taxi passengers will always come back to pay their fare after they have dealt with their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms; and workers always give an honest answer of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good trust in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman (紳士)”.【小題1】
Are the Finns really foolish?【小題2】
What is the taxi fare in Finland?【小題3】
Who can have free dinner in hotels?【小題4】
Will the Finnish workers get paid by the hour or by the day?【小題5】
What do you think of the people in Finland?
