【題目】 We are told to travel the world, discover new things and meet new people. But there is one problem. Even paying for a bed for the night makes you feel as if broadening your minds requires plenty of money — and for students, that is not always possible.

The words “youth hostel” (青年旅舍) for your parents might mean smelly dormitories (寢室)with six strangers, or having to pay for messy towels, and dirty pillows. However, youth hostels nowadays — especially the ones in China — are wonderful.

In Chengdu, my friend and I were served free coffee and the people working there gave us suggestions of the best ways to visit the pandas and the best hotpot restaurants in Sichuan.

In Yangshuo, I made friends with a German and two Americans. We rented bikes from our hostel owner and rode around the city. When it rained, the hostel owner lent me his raincoat. One night the housekeeper cooked us a great meal of homemade Chinese dishes.

Never did I pay more than 50 yuan for a bed. Sometimes, even though I had booked a “dormitory”, I ended up in a private room by myself. Because these are “youth hostels”, you can meet lots of students like yourself, all of whom want to get the most out of a small budget (預算).

The best two websites for finding and booking hostels are www.hostelbooker.com and www.hostelworld.com. Not only do they allow you to organize everything online, they also give each hostel a score depending on how the guests feel when they remain there.

Travel the world, discover new things, and meet new people — all for the price of a cup of coffee? Just choose the city and now you go!

【解析】

本篇文章難度適中,主要向外出度假的學生提出建議,在預算不多的情況下可以住在青年旅社,并舉例說明這樣做的好處。

1推理判斷題。根據(jù)Even paying for a bed for the night makes you feel as if broadening your minds requires plenty of money and for students, that is not always possible“即使是花錢買一個晚上的床,也會讓你覺得開闊眼界似乎需要很多錢,而對學生來說,這并不總是可能的”可推斷出,這是為學生寫的,故選B。

2細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)The words youth hostel (青年旅舍) for your parents might mean smelly dormitories (寢室)with six strangers, or having to pay for messy towels, and dirty pillows“青年旅社這個單詞對于父母來說可能意味著有六個陌生人帶有臭味的寢室,或者不得不為凌亂的毛巾和臟枕頭付錢”可知,涉及了六個陌生人分享一個宿舍、毛巾是臟的以及枕頭是臟的,但是并沒有涉及到提供咖啡,故選D。

3細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)In Yangshuo, I made friends with a German and two Americans. We rented bikes from our hostel owner and rode around the city. When it rained, the hostel owner lent me his raincoat. One night the housekeeper cooked us a great meal of homemade Chinese dishes“在陽朔,我與一個德國人和兩個美國人交朋友,我們從賓館主人那里租了自行車并且繞著城市騎行,當下雨時,這個賓館的主人借給我他的雨靴。一天晚上,這個女管家為我們做了一頓豐盛的中國家常菜”可知,我和幾個德國和美國的朋友旅行,排除A;我們騎自行車旅行,排除B;當下雨時,賓館的主人將他的雨靴借給我,而不是租給我,排除C;我們在賓館中享用中國菜,故選D。

4推理判斷題。根據(jù)Even paying for a bed for the night makes you feel as if broadening your minds requires plenty of money and for students, that is not always possible“即使是花錢買一個晚上的床,也會讓你覺得開闊眼界似乎需要很多錢,而對學生來說,這并不總是可能的”以及Travel the world, discover new things, and meet new people all for the price of a cup of coffee? Just choose the city and now you go!“全世界旅行、發(fā)現(xiàn)新事物并且遇見新的人,所有的這些是一杯咖啡的價格,選擇這個城市”可知,目的是建議讀者用最少的預算住青年旅社,故選C。

【題目】Dear Editor,

I am writing with regards to the article "Is the TV Dead" that appeared in your newspaper on March 4th The author said that with the rise of the Internet, the TV was becoming less and less important in our lives

I find it very difficult to agree with this view (觀點). The TV is still the main way most of us get our entertainment at home It offers us the chance to see top musical artists, great films and documentaries and sometimes, thanks to important televised events it has the power to bring the whole nation and all ages together in a way which the Internet never could

Your article was especially critical (批判的) of the TV for the poor quality of programmes we now have It is certainly true that many of the channels offer nothing more than repeats or low budget (預算) programmes However, I would argue (辯論) that the most of content on the Internet is also of questionable quality I agree that it is easy to keep uptodate with the latest news on the Internet but I'm sure most of us still enjoy sitting down to the News on TV in the evening just as much

The writer is correct in saying that the Internet has become our major source (來源) for research and I think this is its main strength However, criticizing (批評) the TV for not being as good is completely unfair Information programmes like documentaries are made as entertainment not as research tools, and they will continue to be popular with viewers

So I don't think the writer should be so quick to write the TV off Just the opposite, I think it has many more years left in it!

Yours sincerely,

Samantha Johnson
