We sometimes say the lion is “the king of the jungle(叢林)” because it is stronger and more dangerous than the other animals. It can run faster than most other animals and it can hunt(捕獵) the best. The lion is the highest animal in the land food chain. In the sea, the shark is at the top of the food chain. It can swim faster than most other sea animals. It can also use its big teeth to catch other sea animals and eat them.

What is at the top of the world's food chain? People are! We are not the biggest or fastest, but we are the cleverest. We could not run faster than most animals, so we invented cars and now we can move the fastest. We could not fight better than a lion, so we invented guns. Now we can hunt the best.

People's inventions are clever, but they can be dangerous, too. For example, many years ago in Inner Mongolia, people used guns to kill a lot of wild wolves. The wild wolves usually eat wild rabbits. But in recent(近來的) years, the number of wild rabbits is becoming bigger and bigger because the number of wild wolves is getting smaller and smaller. The wild rabbits competed(競(jìng)爭(zhēng)) for the grass with the sheep and cows. Much of the grassland became desert because it was seriously destroyed(毀壞) by the rabbits.

Remember that we are a part of the food chain, so we are in danger, too! If we protect animals, we are protecting ourselves.

1.How many kinds of food chains are mentioned in this passage?

[ ]

A.Two.
B.Three.

3.Which order of the pictures best describes the third paragraph?

[ ]

A.b, d, a, c, e
B.b, d, f, c, e
C.b, f, a, e, c

4.In what way do we say people's inventions can be sometimes dangerous?

5.What is the best title(標(biāo)題) of the passage?

Why do we need to throw less away? There are two reasons. One is that some resources (資源) are nonrenewable (不可再生的) That means there is only a certain amount of that resource in the world . One example of this is oil. When we use up all the oil in the world, there will be no more.

There is another reason for throwing less away. All of our trash has to be put somewhere. Often , it is put into garbage dumps (垃圾場(chǎng)). Much of that trash will be there for hundreds of years. The dumps will be filled up with all this trash.

There are three ways to cut down on trash.

One way is to recycle. When you recycle something, it means it is made into another shape and used again. Old newspaper may become paper bags. A glass jar can be melted(熔化)and made into a bottle .

Another way to cut down on trash is to reuse things. You can wash and use again a bottle that can hold mustard (芥末醬)or something else .

Hello Sandy,

We have just returned from our holiday. We went with our friends Edward Smith and his wife Tina to the Yorkshire Moors. This is a beautiful place. It is a natural park. There are lots of places to walk on the tops of the hills, miles of grassland with no people, just sheep and birds.

Edward, who had just come out of hospital, could not walk as far as be used to. However this meant that we walked in the mornings, and then stopped at a cafe for lunch each day, before returning to the place we live. Edward and I slept in front of the fire all afternoon, while the ladies went for another walk. Very pleasant!

I have taken lots of photos from the place we live, across the valley(峽谷)below us, of the morning sunrise, and the mist in the valley. Also, in England, the old steam powered trains(蒸汽火車)are very popular. I have taken many photos of the train and from it.

Yesterday we had the first snow of this winter. It is very early (we usually expect snow in January). It rained all day, then snowed in the evening. Today we have bright sunshine!

Both Jenny and I are well I don’t know if I told you, in the last e-mail, that Jenny is now working in a hotel. Although she has to work hard, people there are nice and she is enjoying the work.

Please write to us to tell us your news.

Yours,

Victor

As we know, there are differences between western culture and Chinese culture. We can see differences
when we pay attention to the words are used. Let's look at the words about animals and plants. Most
expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example,"a homeless dog","a mad dog","a running dog" and "a dog
catching a mouse", have negative (消極的) meanings. But in western countries, dogs are thought to be honest
and good friends of humans. In English, people use the dog to describe positive (積極的) actions. For example,"you are a lucky dog" means you are a lucky person. And "every dog has its day" means each person has good
luck sometimes. To describe a person's serious illness, they say "sick as a dog". The word "dog-tired" means
very tired. However, Chinese love cats very much. But in western culture,"cat" is often used to describe a
woman who is cruel (冷酷的). There are many other examples of how "cat" is used differently as well.
The rose is regarded as a symbol (象征) of love in both China and some western countries. People think
the rose stands for (代表) love, peace (和平), courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flower of
England, America and many other countries.
The words about plants and animals are used in positive or negative ways in different cultures. We can
learn about many differences in cultures by comparing how some words are used.
