As the Internet becomes more popular, many older media (媒體) businesses are dying out. But
TV seems to be doing OK. In fact, it's doing better than OK. Though the Internet is popular in the
world, television continues to draw more and more people all over the world to many of its programs.
Hundreds of millions turn to TV to watch World Cup soccer,Olympic Games and Discoveries.
In many places, increasing numbers of people can watch more TV than before. Ten years ago,
only 44% of British homes had satellite or cable TV(衛(wèi)星或有線電視).Today, more than 93% do.
More importantly, recent studies show that people are spending more time watching TV. Surprisingly,
this is even true of young people between the ages of 8 and 18.Today's television industry has given so
many choices. As a result, people can watch more of the things they like 24 hours a day.
The technology behind television has also improved. The big boxes that once filled living rooms are
gone. Today's TV screens are thinner and thinner, yet the pictures are better and better. TVs are also
moving from living rooms into kitchens and vehicles.
For years, TVs have also been used as video game players. But now they have been used in a few
new ways. Many televisions can connect to the Internet and record programs. They also let people
watch two programs at the same time. Today the most modern television has been on the way of
development.
The Internet is the main challenge (挑戰(zhàn)) for television now. But TV industry has shown that

Do you know why different animals or pests have their special colors? Colors in them seem to be
used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts (蝗蟲) , but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because
locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of' crops. When crops are green,
locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops
have. Some other pests with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they
have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you'll find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions
and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters. This is because
they have the colors much like the trees. They can often hide in the trees and catch some other little
animals.
Have you ever noticed an even stranger act? A kind of' fish in the sea can send out a kind of very
black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, its enemies cannot find it. And it
immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.

On June 26, 2000, two scientists, called Francis Collins and Craig Venter, told the world that they
could now read the whole "map" of the human body: DNA. DNA is something that everybody has, and
it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason that we look like our mother and father, because we get
some of their DNA to make our own.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Gregor Mendel
discovered a special reason why we look the same as other people in our family. It is because of small
things named "genes" in our body. In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick made another discovery
and found out that those small parts are real messages written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, Marshall Nirenberg and Johann Matthaei found a message in DNA showing how DNA
tells the cell (細(xì)胞) to build its parts. Scientists have now found all the words in the DNA map, but we
still do not understand what they all do. By understanding what just one "word" means, we can help
save more people from several illnesses.
Most people hope that this will help make better medicine and help sick people. Other people worry
that when people begin to know more words and find out lots of other information, we might use it in a
wrong way, just to make people more attractive, or stop sick people from getting jobs. Man would have
to meet a lot of trouble if DNA technic wasn’t limited in use.
