【題目】閱讀短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題。
Sally was a student. It was going to be her mother’s birthday. She wanted to buy her a present that would be nice and useful but not expensive.
A week before her mother’s birthday, she went shopping after a quick and simple lunch. When she had been looking for half an hour, she found a shop that was selling cheap umbrellas, and decided to take a black one, since her mother had lost hers the month before.
She thought, “You could carry that when you are wearing clothes of any color.” So she decided to buy a lovely black umbrella and took it back to the school with her until her classes were over.
On her way back home in the train that evening she felt hungry because she had such a small lunch that she went along to the dining car for another sandwich and a cup of coffee. She had left the black umbrella above her seat in the compartment(車廂), but when she got back, it had gone! When she had left the compartment, there had been no other passengers (乘客) in it, but now there were three.
Sally began to cry when she saw that the umbrella was no longer there. The other passengers felt very sorry for her and asked what the matter was. She told them that the black umbrella she had bought for her mother was gone, and that she had to get out at the next station. After the three other passengers heard it, they asked her for her mother’s address so that they could send the umbrella to her if someone had taken it by mistake, and brought it back after Sally had got out of the train.

【題目】Don Ritchie, a famous Australian man. For nearly 50 years, he successfully stopped 160 people from killing themselves at a cliff(懸崖) called ‘the Gap’ – with just a kind word and a smile.
Ritchie had served in the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. In 1964, he moved into a house on Old South Head Road. He began saving strangers soon after.
Ritchie was a real gentleman who purposely chose to live right across the street from ‘the Gap’, just because he wanted to continue saving lives. He would wake up every morning and look out of the window for anyone standing too close to the edge of the cliff. If he saw someone and thought they might jump, he would simply walk over with a smile and say, “Is there something I could do to help you?” That sounds very simple, but it worked – Ritchie tried to have a talk with these people and ended up inviting them back to his house for tea or breakfast.
In 2006, Ritchie was given the Medal of the Order of Australia for all his saving lives. In 2010, he and his wife were named Woollahra Council’s citizens of the year and in 2011, he was given the Local Hero Award for Australia by the National Australia Day Council.
In a situation where most would turn a blind eye, Don has taken action. With such simple actions Don has saved a number of lives. Don’s story touched the hearts of all Australians and challenged us to rethink what it means to be a good neighbor.
【1】What is the nationality of Don Ritchie?
A. American. B. Canadian.
C. Australian. D. Britain.
【2】Why did he choose to live right across the street from ‘the Gap’?
A. Because he wanted to be proud of himself.
B. Because he wanted to continue saving lives.
C. Because he would like to talk with strangers.
D. Because he would like to enjoy the view outside.
【3】When was he given the Local Hero Award for Australia?
A. In 1964. B. In 2006.
C. In 2010. D. In 2011.
【4】What can we learn from the passage?
A. It’s important for him to get these prizes.
B. He saved people through giving them money.
C. We should rethink how to be a good neighbour.
D. He stopped 210 people from killing themselves.

【題目】Today there are more fires than in the past . Over 100,000 wildfires burn each year in America . Russia has 20,000 to 35,000 wildfires and Australia has about 60,000 each year. These fires destroy(損害)huge areas of forests and burn hundreds of homes .
Many experts believe there are several reasons for this sudden increase in fires. The first reason is climate(氣候)change . In 2010, Russia had the hottest and driest summer with strong winds in a century. In just one month, 500 fires destroyed over 2,000 homes. Some people lost their lives .
Traditional fire-fighting practices are another reason for the increase in fires. In America, firefighters used to quickly put out every fire as quickly as they could. They didn’t allow the grass and trees to burn. As a result , today many forests have thicker vegetation(植被)which provides more fuel(燃料)for fires . So surprisingly, America has many more fires today partly because of its past fire-fighting practices.
Scientists now understand that a fire can be a natural part of a healthy forest. As a result, countries like Australia allow some fires to burn naturally. The fire makes old trees thinner. This allows sunlight to reach the ground. As a result, fires help new trees to grow. Therefore , if a fire is not a serious threat(威脅)to people , firefighters may let it burn naturally .
【1】Russia had so many fires in one month in 2010 because __________ .
A. lightening spread the fire
B. there was much fuel for fires

D. it was very hot , dry and windy

A. There are fewer wildfires
B. There are more fires today
C. The weather becomes warmer and drier
D. Trees and grass become thinner
【3】 The main idea of Paragraph 4 is that __________ .
A. fires are serious threats to human beings
B. Australian firefighters don’t put out fires
C. fires can play an important role in forests
D. it’s difficult for firefighters to control the fires
【4】 Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage ?
A. Two reasons for the increase in fires are mentioned.
B. Russia has the hottest and driest forest.
C. Australia allows all the fires to burn naturally.
