You have probably heard it before, most likely from your English teacher. If you want to become a good writer, read good writing. Unluckily, you may not have understood what did good to you and even what you were supposed to get from that experience.
As you start reading a book, poem, or story, do so with no thought at all and the experience will improve your writing. you may not have understood what did good to you and even what you were supposed to get from that experience.
or to learn. As you progress through the work, think about whether it is “easy” reading or not. Do you become so interested in the subject and flow of the writing that you completely forget the person who wrote it, or does the composition sometimes call too much attention to itself through words and phrases that seem out of place or unexpected? The second situation is a chance to learn from the writer’s mistakes. In fact, the reader should not have to worry about how a writer does “his thing” ... he should be able to just enjoy and learn. Every time a word strikes you as poorly chosen, stop to consider why it has this effect. Also, do not spend a lot of time analyzing (分析) the passage but put more efforts in enjoying it from the whole.
Another thing I do, particularly with nonfiction (非小說(shuō)) books, is to select a part to read as if it is a completely separate work. Once again, read as a common reader rather than a critic (批評(píng)家). For learning how words and phrases work together on the most basic level, however, nothing is more suitable than devoting yourself to reading poems. A poet is often trying to put a book’s worth of meaning and feelings into lines, and every side of the work shows a very close attention to craft (工藝).
As you can see, there is no simple way of reading to improve your writing. The key is not to make it boring. Select writers you admire or like most, and enjoy their works as anyone else would. As long as you are reading, you are improving yourself as a writer.

Venice, a city in the northeast of Italy, is famous throughout the world for its buildings and romantic canals (運(yùn)河). But in February every year, people come to Venice for another reason. The city carnival fills the place with excitement and fun. This year, the celebration runs from February 4 to 21.
Colorful costumes have always played a very important role in the Venetian carnival. The carnival happens at the start of the Christian fasting (齋戒) period of Lent. It was traditionally a time to go a bit crazy with eating, drinking, dancing and dressing up before the fast began. People used masks to hide their social identity so that the nobility(貴族) would look no different from the commoners.
Today the carnival is largely for the tourists. “Venetians don’t dress up for Carnival after the age of 10.” Giuseppina Giudice, who has lived in the city all her life, told the Guardian. “All we see of Carnival is a river of strangers who flow into town to feel ‘Venetian’. They fill it, buy a cheap mask and leave with nothing but photographs of St Mark’s Square.”
Some locals want to bring back the original (最初的) feel of Carnival. In 2009, two social networking groups started organizing their own carnival. Visitors were invited. But there were no expensive tickets or fancy ball dresses---- just an old-fashioned Italian street party. “Tourists are welcome to our party ---- the more we can show them about the real Venice rather than the postcard Venice, the better,” Matteo Secchi, one of the organizers, told the Guardian.

The holiday’s upon us.After months of study, you have some time to yourself. So, why not read a book? Well, some people will say, “Why trouble with books? We have the Internet and other media (媒體) that offer a lot more colorful programs.Books are history!”
But don’t be fooled. There’s still a lot to be said for reading-and reading as widely as possible.
(1) One clear reason is that a well-chosen ______ is a wonderful collection of ______ and expressions, so long as you have a good dictionary, of course.Believe me, it’s far easier to get new English words and expressions from a book or article than it is from the TV or the Internet.
(2) But an even more important point is that books give you something that modern media simply cannot. The webpage(網(wǎng)頁(yè))is always full of pictures and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible.
Though “easy” may be welcome, unluckily it’s of little use for any long-time development of reading skills and the general language level. For that, there’s still no substitute(替代品)for a book.
But perhaps the best single reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it by yourself means that it’s something you do by and for yourself. You can choose what you want to read. It’s hard work, but while you are reading, you’ll find that what once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure.Reading can bring us pleasure.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問(wèn)題.
If a snake bites you, take a photo with your mobile phone! It may save your life. This is the surprising advice of a British cook.
One day Henry Jackson was working in a restaurant kitchen. He picked up a dish from the table, and suddenly a snake appeared…and bit him on the hand.
“I went to try to pick it up and it bit me again. I threw it across the kitchen, and it landed in the fridge. So I closed the door,” Mr. Jackson said.
Anyway, Mr. Jackson stayed cool and he took a photo of the snake with his mobile phone. Soon his hand began to ache and he went to hospital. Then his chest began to hurt. Doctors couldn’t say what was wrong because they didn’t know what kind of snake it was. Then Mr. Jackson remembered his mobile phone photo. The doctors sent it to London Zoo. When they knew the kind of snake, they could give Mr. Jackson the right medicine, and he left hospital the next day.
小題1:What did Mr. Jackson do after the snake bit him again?

小題2:Why did Mr. Jackson close the fridge door?
