【題目】

On a freezing January morning, Myron opened the library in Iowa. She heard a cat cry and finally found a yellow kitten in a pile of books.

“His little feet were frozen,” recalls Myron. “We gave him a bath to warm him up and he purred the whole time so that we know he liked us very much.” That was 1988 and it was a story for Dewey, the cat who has lived happily among the books ever since. “His story has a life of its own, we have people drive hundreds of miles out of their way just to see Dewey. We even had a Japanese public television crew come here to make a short film of him. ”Shortly after the kitten’s rescue, a photo of the library’s “new employee” appeared in local newspapers. Local people were invited to vote for the name of the kitten. “We have never had such a big crowd for a contest and there wasn’t even a prize,” Myron says with a laugh.

Dewey grew from a popular local “l(fā)ibrary employee” to a national star with his pictures on calendars. However, he is not the only cat who lives among books. Library cats greet people in about 125 libraries across America. Most live and “work” comfortable, small town libraries where they don’t get lost in the books. Library cats used to make a living by catching rats, but library cats have more duties: to a make the library a pleasant place.

“Library cats just create a nice, warm atmosphere(氣氛), ”says Gary Roma, producer of Puss in Books, the film about library cats. “The cats attract children to the library and the elderly who maybe can’t have pets in their apartments, ”says Roma, “Books, libraries, and cats just go together.”

We might love to tell others about our unusual experiences—that time we climbed Mount Everest, tasted some rare food or ran into a famous person on the street. But new research suggeststhat if we s1 these unusual experiences with others, it may bring something uncomfortable.

"Unusual experiences are pleasant in the moment but can cause social t2 in the long run, "says psychological scientist Gus Cooney of Harvard University. "Some people mistakenly thought that having an unusual experience would make them the star. But they were wrong, because to be unusual is to be different from other people, and social interaction is based on something similar. "

"We all h3 to have experiences that are fine and rare, and when we get what we want, we are always eager to tell our friends. But I've noticed that conversations always seem to develop well on more ordinary topics." Cooney explains. " This made me wonder if unusual experiences were r4 as lovely as we had thought. "

To find out, Cooney and his colleagues had 68 people come to the lab in groups of f5. In each group, one person was asked to watch a popular video of a street magician performing for a crowd, while the other three people were asked to watch an ordinary animated video. After watching the videos, the people sat around a table and had a five-minute free conversation.

After the group discussion, the people who watched the magician's performance felt w6 than those who watched the animated video, because they felt they were not included during the discussion.

This finding suggests that we ought to give more thought in choosing what to talk about with others. If an experience turns you into someone who has n7 in common with others, then no matter how good it is, it won't make you comfortable in the long run.

Do you want to have a doll that can talk with you? In the book The Ventriloquist’s Daughter, a girl named Liur gets a doll like this. But it doesn’t always make her happy.

Lin Man-Chiu, a writer from Taiwan, wrote the book. The book tells a loving story about Liur and her father.

Liur loses her mother at a young age. Her grandfather sends her father to a school in the US. Five years later, he comes back with a doll named Carola. This doll is quite special — it can speak like a person! However, Carola makes a lot of problems for the family.

After reading this book, I thought Liur and her father were unlucky. In fact, this story is about the writer’s own unhappy childhood. She had six sisters. But her grandfather wanted a grandson. After I learned this, I knew — everyone has demons (心魔) in their hearts, but we should do our best to defeat (擊敗) them.
