【題目】 A man in Germany may not have been in danger when he called the police on a baby squirrel running after him, but it all worked out for the best for the funny suspect.

Emergency services in the city of Karlsruhe got a call on Thursday from a man afraid that the tiny animal wouldn't stop following him around. The Guardian reported. Police arrived at the scene, where the squirrel finally stopped running after him by lying down and going to sleep.

It turned out that the squirrel actually needed help, the police said. ""It often happens that squirrels which have lost their mothers look for a replacement (代營) and then focus (集中) their efforts on one person, "the police spokeswoman Christina Krenz told The Guardian.

The squirrel, now named Karl-Friedrich, is in the care of an animal center. Karlsruhe police posted a statement on Facebook about the animal, including several lovely photos.

The baby squirrel chase is the second squirrel event to make international headlines this summer. Last month, a London woman called police after she heard loud noises in her home and suspected a burglar. The intruder turned out to be a squirrel, according to the police who came for help.

Although the government in the German case said the squirrel did need help, wildlife experts warn that before intervening (介入) in the case where you suspect a squirrel is orphaned (孤兒的),you should do your best to make sure the animal truly requires help. The Wildlife Centre of Virginia, which gets hundreds of calls every year about supposedly orphaned squirrels, published this handy guide to help decide whether such an animal really needs help and what to do if so. When in doubt, contact a local wildlife rescuer or animal center.

【題目】 A new rubbish sorting system (垃圾分類系統(tǒng)) has been put into use in Fangchengyuan Community in Beijing. Local people not only sort their rubbish, but also put QR codes (二維碼) on it.

"When the rubbish is collected and the codes are seen, I will get reward points to exchange for small gifts and even some money," one of the local people told reporters. "It's really creative and encouraging."

This smart system has been carried out in 350 communities in Beijing. The capital of China has joined a list of cities in the country that take action to support rubbish sorting. For example, Shenzhen and Shanghai have made laws to punish people and organizations for not sorting rubbish correctly.

China produces quite a lot of rubbish every year. Much of the rubbish is buried in soil or burned without being sorted. Landfills (填埋場) take up a lot of land and have a risk of polluting the soil and water nearby. And burning rubbish can produce harmful gases. Through rubbish sorting, we can reduce the use of landfills and air pollution.

What's more, rubbish sorting saves resources, which could bring economic benefits (經(jīng)濟利益). For example, a ton of waste paper can be reused to make about 850 kg of paper, saving 17 trees and 50 percent of water. Because of their benefits, some countries have developed successful sorting systems.

Japan has a strict and detailed system. When people throw away a water bottle, the cap, the wrapper (包裝紙) and the bottle itself have to go into three different bins. Every year, families receive special rubbish sorting timetables and directions from their local governments. They are advised to follow the timetables and directions when they throw away rubbish.

In Australia, every family is provided with three rubbish bins -the red lid (蓋子) bin for "general waste" like food and plastic bags, the yellow lid bin for "recycling" like steel and glass, and the green lid bin for "green waste" such as grass and leaves. On the streets, the bins are printed with pictures of the things that are allowed inside. It makes recycling quite easy.

1Which of the following is NOT the consequence (后果) of burying rubbish?

A.Polluting soil.B.Polluting water.

C.Taking up a lot of land.D.Saving resources.

2Which paragraph discuss the economic benefits of rubbish sorting?

A.Paragraph 3.B.Paragraph 4.

C.Paragraph 5.D.Paragraph 6.

3In Australia, which bin should you put food left after dinner in?

A.The red lid bin.B.The yellow lid bin.

C.The green lid bin.D.The black lid bin.

4Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A.In Australia, the green lid bin is used for all kinds of recyclable (可回收的) waste.

B.In Japan, all kinds of things for recycling are printed on rubbish bins.

C.Japanese people cannot throw a bottle into a bin unless they move away the wrapper first.

D.Australian people have to obey local timetables and directions to throw away rubbish strictly.

【題目】 I always think my daughter Kendall is the best—that's just what parents do. When she was only three, she sang for the people, like a little angel.

When Kendall was five, we noticed that she sometimes had a tic (面部抽搐). When the problem got worse, we took her from doctor to doctor. During the treatment, Kendall continued to sing. Surprisingly, her tics disappeared when she sang.

When Kendall was sixteen, we thought she would be cured soon. However, a terrible thing happened.

At a party, Kendall jumped on a friend for a piggyback ride. He bent lower than she expected, and she jumped higher than he expected. Kendall flew over his back and landed on the floor—on her neck. She was rushed to hospital, paralyzed(癱瘓) from the neck down. She couldn't move. But her biggest worry wasn't whether she would walk again, but was whether she could try out for a show called American Idol.

As the days went on, feeling on her left side returned, but she was still paralyzed on the right. We weren't sure how much of her movement would come back. A friend brought a microphone and put it on her bed. Every day, Kendall tried hard to pick it up. It was more important for her to pick up that microphone than a spoon or fork.

Sometimes she had to bite a toothbrush to take her mind off the pain. We all cried because of the pain we witnessed. But on the day—only three months after her accident—we cried full of joy when she sang, though she didn't enter the Top 24 of American Idol.

When she was a little girl, she asked me why it was she that had tics. My heart hurt, but I told her, "Kendall, you have a pure heart, a fantastic voice, a strong mind. And you are a beautiful presence.”

1When did they notice that Kendall sometimes had a tic?

A.When she was five.B.When she was sixteen.

C.When she sang.D.When she saw the doctor.

2What was a surprise during the treatment in Paragraph 2?

A.She had a tic.B.Her tics disappeared when she sang.

C.She was cured soon.D.She sang for the people.

3Why was it more important for Kendall to pick up that microphone than a spoon or fork?

A.Because Kendall loved singing.

B.Because Kendall didn't like a spoon or fork.

C.Because Kendall's friend brought the microphone for her.

D.Because that microphone was more beautiful for her than a spoon or fork.

4What is the best title of the passage?

A.An American Idol.

B.A paralyzed girl.

C.The girl who had a tic.

D.A beautiful girl.
