Do you and your friends ever talk about your dreams with each other? If you do, you might have noticed something interesting – some of your friends seldom remember their dreams, but some can always describe their dreams so clearly that it seems like they're describing things that really happened to them. What makes those people different?
The answer is simple. There are two different types of dreamers – low dream recallers(回憶者)and high dream recallers.
Low dream recallers usually remember their dreams only twice a month. But high dream recallers are able to remember them about five mornings a week. And a new study suggests that activity in a certain part of the brain could have something to do with it, reported The Huffington Post.
Perrine Ruby, a French researcher at the Lyon Neuroscience Research Center, studied 41 people (21 high dream recallers and 20 low dream recallers) and recorded their brain activity.
She found that a part of the brain called the temporo-parietal junction (顳頂聯(lián)合區(qū)) was more active in high dream recallers than in low dream recallers – both when they were sleeping and awake.
This brain area collects and processes(編程)information from the outside world. This means that high dream recallers know more about what's happening around them. For example, when they are awake, they respond (對……有反應(yīng)) more strongly to hearing their own names, and when they are sleeping, they are woken more easily by sounds and movements.
By closely studying people's brain activities, Ruby found that high dream recallers have twice as much “wakefulness time” during sleep as low dream recallers do. And it is during these short times of wakefulness that the brain remembers dreams.
“The sleeping brain is not able to remember new information,” Ruby told The Washington Post. “It needs to wake up to be able to do that.”
This is not hard to understand. Just try to think of your own sleeping experiences. If you are worried during the night, you are more likely to remember your dreams, but if you sleep well, you will remember little in the morning, and this is because “you never get a chance to remember”, Robert Stickgold, a Harvard Medical School researcher, told The Washington Post.

D.remember their dreams twice a week
(2)Compared to high dream recallers, low dream recallers ______.

D.To further explain Ruby's research.

This brain area collects and processes(編程)information from the outside world. This means that high dream recallers know more about what's happening around them.

Ruby found that high dream recallers have twice as much “wakefulness time” during sleep as low dream recallers do. 故選A。

We use the Internet for many things: business, shopping, writing letters, talking to people, finding information and so on. In recent years, a new kind of English has grown on the Internet. There's no real word for it yet, so we'll call it e-talk.

People don't like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters (called acronyms). Acronyms are often used in chat rooms(聊天室). Some of them are:

BTW (by the way) BRB (be right back)

LOL (laughing out loud) IMO (in my opinion)

People also use many abbreviations. They are shortened forms of words. Some common abbreviations are:

info (information) puter (computer)

pic (picture) sec (second)

We usually don't see people when we communicate(交流) on the Net, so people have new ways to show feelings. Most people use their keyboards to draw "feelings", such as:

:-) (happy) ;-) (joking) :-( (sad) :-O (surprised)

These days, many forums (論壇) have picture feelings. For example:

(happy) (sad) (angry) (cool)

There are even whole new words, like "newbies"(someone who is new on a chat board or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it's called "flaming" the person.

It takes time for people to get used to(適應(yīng)) e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net have their own special ways of communicating. Newbies sometimes have to ask other people what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.

Choose the best answer:

1Why do people type acronyms?

A. To show their feelings.

B. To make jokes.

C. Because people can type them quickly.

D. In this way newbies won't understand them.

2What does, BTW, my putter is not working well. :-( mean?

A. The person is happy about getting a new computer.

B. The person has to go away from their computer.

C. The person is angry at somebody.

D. The person is sad that his computer is having problems.

3If someone is angry, what may he type?

A. B. C. LOL D. BRB.

4E-talk will probably____________.

A. keep changing B. stay the same

C. be used by people on the telephone D. be easy for newbies to understand

5The best title for this passage is________.

A. E-talk B. Picture Feelings

C. How to Use Abbreviations D. The Changing Internet
