【題目】 Karachi, Pakistan, is one of the hottest cities on Earth. In June 2015, more than 1,000 people died there during heat wave(熱浪). “It was a terrible time,” Shahzad Qureshi said. “We needed to do something about it.” After the heat wave, Qureshi took action. He started Urban(都市的) Forest. The group plants trees in cities in Pakistan.
Trees help cool the air by providing shade(陰涼) and moisture(水分) through their leaves. Trees can help lower summer temperatures in cities by 2 to 5℃. Trees also provide a place for all kinds of animals. And they create a shady place where people can relax.
Urban Forest planted about 1,300 trees in a park in Karachi. The group uses a method that helps them grow quickly. In just three years, the trees were 30 feet tall. Qureshi hopes that one day, this park will become a forest of 50,000 trees. Since 2015, Qureshi and his team have helped cool the air by planting 14 urban forests in Pakistan. Twelve are in Karachi.
In 2017, Qureshi helped plant an urban forest at Karachi Grammar School. First, he met with students there. He taught them about how trees help the environment. Then the students planted trees in the schoolyard. “They were excited about the project,” Muneeza Shaikhali says. She's a headteacher at Karachi Grammar School. “They themselves had been experiencing the high temperatures in the summer months.”
There are many birds and colorful butterflies in the school. Students go outside during science class to study the forest. “It's like a library of trees in front of the kids,” Qureshi says. “They can learn the species(物種) and insects that are around. It's a beautiful thing to see.”

【題目】 John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.
Dear David,
How time flies! It's been 3 months since I came to China. I'm having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far, I've completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I'd like to share some with you.
In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飛行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.
Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn't appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world.
Lastly, I'd like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals — the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (陰歷). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries.
If you'd like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter.
Best wishes!
yours,
