Sometimes, using hand gestures can be more informative and convenient than using words, especially when you can’t speak someone else’s language. But before you head out into the world using the hand gestures you already know, you may want to do some research first to find out what signs are acceptable — and where.

V for Victory?

In Asia, "V" stands for victory. But in Western countries, it can mean peace, too. When you make the sign, be sure to have the front of your palm facing outward. Showing people the back of your hand is an impolite gesture in the UK.

L for Loser.

The letter "L", made with your thumb and index finger, stands for "Loser" and is an insult. So it’s best to avoid making this sign.

Blah-blah-blah!

This gesture looks like a talking mouth. It is often used to describe someone who is talking too much and doing too little. It’s also a little rude.

Fingers Crossed.

Crossing the index and middle fingers is used to wish for good luck. Students might make this sign before an exam. Of course, it doesn’t actually help!

ILY Sign.

This really nice hand gesture is from American Sign Language. It combines the letters "I" "L" and "Y" to mean "I love you".

Counting with Fingers.

And finally, for the most useful signs — how to count the numbers from one to ten. Notice how English-speaking countries use both hands instead of one. So the next time you go to a market in the US, remember to use these signs to bargain.

1How many gestures are mentioned in the passage?

A.3.B.4.C.5.D.6.

2When a young man falls in love with a beautiful lady, which of the following signs he may make to her?

A.B lah-blah-blah.B.Fingers Crossed.C.ILY Sign.D.Counting with Fingers.

3When you make the sign "V", it’s to show people the back of your hand in the UK.

4Lily is hanging out with her mother in the mall now. They may use the sign when shopping.

A.VB.Counting with FingersC.Fingers CrossedD.L

5According to the passage, which is TRUE?

A.It’s best to avoid making "L" sign because it is an insult.

B.Crossing the index and your thumb fingers is used to wish for good luck.

C.ILY Sign is often used to describe someone who is talking too much and doing too little.

D.You can make "V" gesture anywhere because it always stands for victory.

【題目】

After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it wasn’t easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off the raft (木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.

When I came up out of the water, I couldn’t see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He’s dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who’s there?”

“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I’ve fallen off a river boat.”

Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.

A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.

On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn’t break up. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.

We decided to leave at once. It’s all right living in a house for a little while, but you feel more free and easy and comfortable on a raft.

1What happened LAST in the story?

A. George saw a big house. B. George got some new clothes.

C. George found Jim on the ground. D. George jumped off the raft into the water.

2Why did George Jackson answer “quickly” when someone called from the house?

A. George felt afraid and nervous. B. George felt happy and lucky.

C. George really wanted to stay there. D. George didn’t want to lie to him.

3Which of these old sayings best fits this story?

A. It never rains but it pours. B. Every dog has its day.

C. Burn the candle at both ends. D. Many hands make light work.
