Here are some accidents which often happen to children:
◆ Scald (燙傷)-Small children don't understand that hot water and hot drinks can be dangerous. Adults
often forget the danger, too. It only takes a cup of tea or coffee, or a bath that's too hot to scald a child badly.
◆Falls-Children of all ages fall and hurt themselves from time to time. For babies, the danger is rolling off
the edge of something, like beds, chairs or tables. For babies of two to four, climbing on furniture doesn't
seem dangerous. It's just fun. But it's very easy for them to fall off a piece of furniture, down the stairs, out
of a window or off a balcony (陽臺).
◆Burns-Many children die in house fires and more are badly burnt. A cigarette (香煙) can easily start a
fire. A child can also be burnt by a hot iron or matches.
◆Cuts-Class causes the most serious cuts. So do broken bottles, doors or windows.

Lichens (地衣) are difficult to see. They don't move. They often mix into the living place. You might not
even recognize one if you are looking right at it.
Lichens live on rocks, branches, houses, even metal street signs. You can find these colourful organisms
(有機體) almost everywhere-from deserts to rainforests, from Antarctica to Africa. They've traveled in outer
space, and some scientists think there might even be lichens on Mars.
What you probably don't realize is that a lichen is more than a single thing. It consists of two different types
of living organisms: a fungus (菌類) and an alga (藻類). Neither of these organisms is a plant, so the lichen isn't
a plant either.
Through photosynthesis (光合作用), the alga absorbs the sun's energy to make food for the fungus, which
is a place for the alga to live. However, the alga cannot leave the fungus.
Around the world, scientists have found tens of thousands of types of lichens. Many may not even have
been discovered yet. As scientists continue to find new kinds of lichens, they are also working to understand
how the lichens are connected to one another. By putting together a lichen family tree, they hope to understand
why so many different types of lichens have grown in so many places around the world.
Many researchers are trying to understand the basic facts of the organisms and their connections.
Researchers are also using lichens to examine the health of the environment.
1. What do we know about lichens according to the passage?
A. They will die if they leave the earth.
B. There are more lichens than plants on the earth.
C. They are similar to the environment around them in colour.
D. They are too small to be easily seen by people.
2. What is the function of the alga in lichens?
A. It produces food for the fungus.
B. It offers a living place for the fungus.
C. It makes the lichen a plant.
D. It can protect the fungus.
3. We can know from the passage that _____.
A. lichens can be used to better examine the environment
B. lichens don't have any differences in colour or size
C. lichens don't use photosynthesis like a green plant
D. scientists have discovered every kind of lichen

It's 2009. You feel sick, so you go to the doctor. She checks your fever, looks at your throat, and asks
what you've been thinking about lately. When you leave, she gives you some medicine, but also a list of
thinking skills that you are supposed to practice daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of
your illness.
Doctors and other scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people behave in the way
that they do, called psychologists, are starting to believe it. You know that your brain is connected to every
part of your body through your nervous system (神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)). Now scientists have proved that how you think
and feel can have an influence on the health of your body.
Stress (壓力, 緊張) is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. Of course, everybody
has stress more or less; nobody's life is perfect. In fact, stress is necessary. Without stress, we would never
learn anything or grow or change. We would probably be bored to death. But too much stress can hurt you.
It can weaken your body's protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more
likely to have an accident.
When you feel stress, your brain sends a message to your body to produce a chemical called adrenaline (腎
上腺素) . Adrenaline speeds up your breathing and your heartbeat. Today you have a different kind of stress.
Problems like endless homework or troubles with your family are the kind of things you can't fight or run away
from, so you don't use up all that adrenaline.lt just stays bottled up inside you, and that's what can do something
bad to you.
What can you do about stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren't under so much
stress. You can set up a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to try to work things out
with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can't change a stressful situation. Sometimes you don't
even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful.
The link (關聯(lián)) between your body and brain works in two ways. Your body can help your mind deal with
stress. If you are under stress, you need to take especially good care of your body. It's important to get enough
sleep and eat nutritious meals. Some people take a vitamin-mineral pill every day. Another thing that you can do
is daily exercise, If you go walking or do aerobic dancing or work out at the gym, you give your body a chance
to burn up some of that adrenaline. Of course, a person who isn't used to much physical activity should start
slowly. Anyone with a continuing physical problem should check with a doctor before starting any exercise
programs.
1. A psychologist is a person who may help you with your _____.
A. illness and abilities
B. thoughts and behaviour
C. mind and nervous system
D. physical activity and daily exercise
2. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. You shouldn't go to the gym if you are under stress.
B. One can do his homework to burn up adrenaline.
C. Diseases and accidents are caused by stress.
D. Everyone needs stress to improve himself.
3. From the last sentence of Paragraph 5 we can infer that _____.
A. it's difficult to change a stressful situation
B. it's not stressful when a good change takes place
C. a big change will cause another stressful situation
D. a stressful situation can't be changed without any effort
4. What is probably the best title for this passage?
A. The Body-Brain Link
B. The Causes of Stress
C. The Advice on Health
D. The Nervous System

French doctors and American scientists have reported doing an operation in which the doctor was outside
the operating room. This kind of operation is known as robotic operation.
Doctor Marescaux did the operation in an office in New York City last month, while a sixty-eight-year-old
woman patient was in a hospital in Strasbourg, France.
A doctor in Strasbourg got the patient ready. He placed medical tools and a small video camera in her
stomach area. Doctor Marescaux in New York watched the patient on a video screen. Then he used the
computer to send messages to the robot machine. The robot moved the tools that cut the woman's gallbladder
(膽囊) away. The woman got well soon after the operation and left the hospital two days later.
Experts say the main problem with such a robotic operation is based on high-speed telecommunications
between the doctor and the robot. Technology must be able to send a doctor's order to a robot to move the
tools quickly.
Experts also say a successful robotic operation will improve an operation. For example, the robot can make
much smaller movements than a person can. A robot machine can turn tools in ways that a doctor's hand
cannot.
Doctors say such a robotic operation will make possible safer and better operations in the future. They say
it will improve doctor training. It will also mean that doctors could do an operation on people in dangerous
places far away. And it could mean that people could have operations done by top doctors without having to
travel to the city where doctors work.
1. "Robotic operation" means "______".
A. a special kind of robot invented by doctors
B. an operation done far away
C. an operation done with the help of a robot
D. something done to mend a robot
2. We use the robot in the operation because ______.
A. it can send messages at a high speed
B. even a top doctor can't do the operation himself
C. it can make the operation safer and better
D. operations can be done without any doctors
3. If we want to use the robot in the operation, we must solve the problem of ______.
A. top doctors
B. smaller movements
C. doctor training
D. high-speed telecommunications
4. If the smaller movement can't be done by doctors in the operation, we may use ______ to solve it.
A. more tools
B. a robot machine
C. a video camera
D. telecommunications
5. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Robotic operation is good for doctor training.
B. Robotic operation has been used in the USA.
C. Experts speak highly of robotic operation.
D. The robot is used to watch the patient clearly.
