treesD. the rainforest people have done something to protect their home">
【題目】More than 50, 000, 000 people live in the rainforests of the world and most of them do not hurt the forest they live in. They eat the fruits that grow on the forest trees, but they do not cut them down. They kill some animals to eat, but they do not destroy them.
When we cut down the rainforests, we destroy these forest people, too. In 1900, there were 1, 000, 000 forest people in the Amazon forest. In 1980, there were only 200, 000.
The Yanomami live along the rivers of the rainforest in the north of Brazil(巴西). They have lived in the rainforest for about 10, 000 years and they use more than 2, 000 different plants for food and for medicine. But in 1988, someone found gold in their forest, and more than 45, 000 people came to the forest and began looking for gold. They cut down the forest to make roads. They made over a hundred airports. The Yanomami people lost land and food. Many died because new illnesses came to the forest with the strange people.
The Yanomami people tried to save their forest, because it was their home. But the people who wanted gold were stronger.
Many forest people try to save their forests. Chico Mendes was famous in Brazil because he wanted to keep the forest for his people. “I want the Amazon forest to help all of us—forest people, and all the Earth,” he said. A few months later, in December 1988, people who wanted to cut down the forest killed Chico Mendes.
In Brazil, people were cutting down the forest of local people to sell the wood. Local people tried to save their rainforest. They made blockades(障礙) across the roads into the forest. In 1987, they closed fifteen roads for eight months. No one cut down any trees during that time.
In Panama (巴拿馬), local people also saved their forest. They made a rainforest park which tourists must spend money visiting.

【題目】閱讀理解。根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷下列句子的正誤。
(A)
When we feel the ground moves suddenly, it means that an earthquake may come. Many of the earthquakes first come under the sea and then happen anywhere on the earth. Especially they often happen near the mountains and seas such as Wenchuan, Japan and Indonesia.
When an earthquake happens, it's very easy to cause a tsunami (海嘯). Houses fall down, many people are injured and even died.
Now scientists are trying their best to study earthquakes. They make maps to show the “earthquake belts (地震帶)”. So the houses there must be quite strong.
We believe that scientists will be able to tell us when and where an earthquake will happen in the near future. Also, they can tell us what to do and how to do. People can even use earthquakes to do something for us humans.
(1)Earthquakes often happen in Japan.
(2)Sometimes an earthquake happens with a tsunami.
(3)Many people lost their lives in the earthquakes because they didn't help each other.
(4)In areas in the “earthquake belts”, people build strong houses.

【題目】The next time you take medicine when you’re ill, you may eat a cone snail(芋螺). At least that’s what some scientists are hoping. Scientists have found that cone snails can help with backache, as well as toothache and other body problems.
There are over 600 different kinds of cone snails. This family is especially found in warm and hot waters in the oceans. They catch and eat small fish and even other cone snails. The snails have venom that they’ll give out and use to kill small animals they have caught because cone snails are slow-moving. Sometimes the venom can even kill people. But some scientists have discovered that the venom can also be used as medicine.
The shells of cone snils are often brightly colored, and have interesting shapes, many people think the shells are so beautiful that people kill them, collect lots of shells, and sell them around the world. The environment is also very dangerous for them because of fishing and boating.
Scientists want to help save the cone snails. They hope to make new rules to stop them from dying. If they die out, scientists may never discover what kinds of medicines they can give us.

Kids and adults like flying kites. Long ago, the first kites were made by Chinese people. Then, people around the world began flying kites.
One story tells a man’s hat got lifted off by wind. He had fun chasing his hat, so he did it again! His hat became the first kite. Other stories tell that people liked watching leaves on windy days. They tied leaves to strings and watched them fly.

You can use a kite to catch fish. First you tie a fishing line to a kite. Then you put bait(魚餌) on the line. You watch the kite with hopes as it flies over the water. When you pull the kite down, you might find a fish on your line! Some people think this is more fun than using a fishing pole(桿).
Many countries have special days to honor kites. People make, sell and fly many types of kites. There are several kite festivals in China. The Beijing International Kite Festival is usually held in April every year. People spend all days flying kites. You might see famous fighter kites.
