【題目】 You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator (電梯) ride. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. It is known as the “Elevator Guy”.

“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (禮儀) is sort of odd (奇怪的).” Gray told BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward (令人窘迫的) places.”

We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, liftusers unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements.

He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want--it’s your own little box. If there are two of you, you go into different comers, standing diagonally (對(duì)角線地) across from each other to create distance. When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every comer. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.

New entrants (新進(jìn)入者) to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for more people the rule is simple -- look down, or look at your phone.

Why are we so awkward in lifts?

“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical (臨床的) psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”

In such a small enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that can’t be construed (理解) as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said.

【題目】 Clara Daly was sitting on an Alaska Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles when she heard a worried voice over the loudspeaker: “Does anyone on board know American Sign Language?”

Clara, 15 at the time, pressed the call button. An air hostess came by and explained the situation. “We have a passenger on the plane who’s blind and deaf,” she said. The passenger seemed to want something, but he was traveling alone and the air hostesses couldn’t understand what he needed.

Clara had been studying ASL for the past year to help blind and deaf people and she knew she’d be able to finger spell into the man’s palm. So she rose from her seat, walked toward the front of the plane, and knelt by the seat of Tim Cook, then 64. Gently taking his hand, she signed, “How are you? Are you OK?” Cook asked for some water.

When it arrived, Clara returned to her seat. She came by again a bit later because he wanted to know the time. On her third visit, she stopped and stayed for a while.

“He didn’t need anything. He was lonely and wanted to talk,” Clara said.

So for the next hour, she talked about her family and her plans for the future. Cook told Clara how he had become blind over time and shared stories of his days as a traveling salesman. Even though he couldn’t see her,she “l(fā)ooked attentively at his face with such kindness,” a passenger reported.

“Clara was amazing,” an air hostess told Alaska Airlines in an interview. “You could tell Cook was very excited to have someone he could speak to, and she was such an angel.”

【題目】 Speaking English fluently (流暢地) might be difficult for you now. But all you need are the right methods and confidence (自信). I have prepared some advice for you.

Stop Being a Student

Stop thinking of yourself as someone who is learning English, and think of yourself as someone who speaks English. It’s a small change, but it will make you feel more confident and help you use the English you already know better.

Try to Learn Phrases

Speaking English fluently means being able to express your thoughts and feelings. Your goal is to speak English in full sentences, so why not learn it in full sentences? You’ll find that English is more useful in your life if you study whole phrases, rather than just simple words.

Studying English for an hour once a week isn’t usually enough to make any real progress. The best way to quickly improve your English is to spend at least a few minutes practicing every day.

Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes

Sometimes it can be difficult to put all those rules and words together into a simple sentence. Don’t let the fear of saying something wrong stop you from speaking. Even if you think you’re making a mistake, keep speaking anyway. Most of the time, people will understand what you're trying to say. The more you speak, the easier it will be.

1Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Practicing English every day helps you make greater progress.

B.Studying whole phrases makes you express your thoughts and feelings worse.

C.Thinking of yourself as an English speaker can make you more confident and use English better.

2What should you do if you make a grammar mistake when you are talking to an native English speaker?

A.Just keep speaking

B.Stop speaking right away.

C.Think of yourself as an English speaker.

3Which of the following titles can be put into “ ”?
