Learning English

　　Many students in China are learning English．Some of these students are small children．Others are teenagers (十幾歲的青少年)．Many are adults (成年人)．Some learn at school, others study by them-selves．A few learn English language over the radio, on television, or in films．One must work hard to learn another language．

　　Why do all these people want to learn English?It is difficult to answer that question．Many boys and girls learn English at school because it is one of their subjects．They study their own language and maths and English…Some people learn English because it is useful for their work．Many people often learn English for their higher studies, because at college or university (大學(xué))some of their books are in Eng-lish．Other people learn English because they want to read newspaper and magazines in English．

Learn a second language

　　There was once a young mouse that lived in a hole in a wall．One day, the young mouse woke up from his sleep and looked out of the hole．As he looked out, a fantastic smell came to his nose．“Cheese!” the mouse said happily to himself．“I'll go and get it now and have it for breakfast．”

　　But then he remembered his parents' words．His parents were very clever mice and often said to their son, “Always wait before you go for a piece of cheese．”

　　So the young mouse waited quietly．Then he heard a quiet “Miaow” and he knew the cat was there．He stayed in the hole and said to himself, “I'm glad I listened to my parents and learned to wait．”

　　The next day, he looked out again．He put his nose out of the hole, and the beautiful smell of cheese came to his nose again．He could see the cheese．It was only a few centimetres away．But he sat still and waited quietly．This time he did not hear any cat noises．Instead he heard a very quiet “Woof, woof．”

　　“It's a dog!” he thought．“If the dog is there, the cat won't be there．I expect the dog has chased the cat away, so I'm safe．” The mouse ran out of the hole and started eating the cheese．He did not see the cat, which caught him and ate him．

　　When the cat finished her meal, she said to herself, “I'm glad I listened to my parents and learned a second language．”

  The most unusual museum in London is the Science Museum. In most museums, there’s no shouting and no running, and you aren’t allowed to touch the exhibits. Then I go upstairs to the Human and Nature room. You can compare your speed with animals there. You hear a noise and push a button. If you aren’t fast enough, the lion catches you! I’m faster than all my friends, but the lion still catches me.

  You can do a lot of things in this museum, but you have to obey some rules as well. For example, you mustn’t take photos of the exhibits in the museum. But you can buy postcards of them in the museum shops.

  Above all, the Science Museum is free. That means you can drop in for a few minutes or you can stay as long as you like – it’s open every day, from 10 am to 6 pm. So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum. It’s my favorite museum in the whole world.
