【題目】 Could you live without a TV for one year? What would you do with all that spare time? Philippa Carling wanted to see if it was possible and persuaded(說(shuō)服)her family to give theirs up for one whole year.
"I live with my husband and our two children," explains Philippa, "and I realized just how much time we spent sitting in front of the TV. The children turned it on first thing in the morning and again when they got back from school. My husband and I were no better. We'd spend the evening together talking about very little but what programme was on at that time. Then the family decided, after lots of arguments (爭(zhēng)論), that we would try to do without a for one year. We nag on the Internet and everyone was allowed to watch some of the recorded programmes-if they had a good reason for doing so." And so, on 24th July last year, the Carling family sold their TV.
Eleven months have now gone by and Philippa believes the experiment (實(shí)驗(yàn)) has own a great success. As she explains, "We were all surprised at how easy it was. The immediate result was we all started to read a lot more, including the children. We spend time together after dinner playing board games around the table and the children finish their homework a lot quicker than before. We talk about what will happen when the year comes to an end and the children have always said they want the TV back. But they've also agreed that life has been good without it."

Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable(一次性的)toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don't have to bring their own. But if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring these things of your own. That's because some hotels in Beijing have no longer provided guests with these disposables. Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It's a waste of natural resources(資源)and is very bad for the environment.
In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and l,320 tons of lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take 100 to 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw away, the better environment we will have.
So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again. Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life:
Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones.
After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then use it over and over again.
Do not use paper cups.
At your school canteen(餐廳),use your own bowls and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
【1】Many guests like to use disposable things because they are very convenient.
【2】Some Beijing hotels have no longer provided guests with free disposable things.
【3】Plastic breaks down easily
【4】After using a plastic bowl or a bag, we'd better throw it away, because it's too dirty to use again.
【5】We should use less plastic things and protect our environment.

【題目】 Mark Zuckerberg, who starts the social network Facebook, often wears jeans and a T-shirt to work, including to important business meetings. Not everyone agrees with him. Some people say he doesn't look serious this way.
Harvard Business School researcher, Franccsca Gino, has a different idea. While most people seem to think that dressing differently from those around you generally has a bad influence, she believes it can actually have a positive(積極的) effect. And she’s done experiments to support her idea. When her researchers, wearing sportswear, visited the expensive shops an Italy, they were usually viewed as wealthier and more important people than those who were well-dressed in designer clothes.
Do people always view less formal(正式的) clothing more positively? Researchers in France took their research out into the street, to the general public. The video they made shows an actor dressed in a well-cut suit and shiny shoes. While walking along the road, he begins to cough badly, stops to catch his breath and falls down. Before he even calls for help, people rush to help him. In another video, the actor appears at the same crowded place and repeats the actions in exactly the same way. But this time, no one comes to help. What’s the difference? He’s wearing untidy clothes and looks like a homeless person. In a situation like this, the clothes you’re wearing could mean the difference between life and death.
It seems that our clothing doesn’t only change the way others view us, but also the way we see ourselves. In an experiment testing students’ ability to pay attention to details(細(xì)節(jié)), the group wearing white lab coats did the best. Why? Researchers told them that they were wearing the doctors coats. The experiment didn’t show whether such influences would last long. More experiments are needed in the future before we decide to make the doctors’ coats a must of fashion.
