     Every year on my birthday since I was 11, a white gardenia(梔子花)was sent to my house. No
card ever came with it. Calls to the flower shop were not helpful at all. After some time I stopped
trying to find out the sender’s name and was just pleased with the beautiful white flower, in soft pink
paper.
     I couldn’t stop imagining(想像)who the giver might be, though. Some of my happiest moments
were spent daydreaming about the sender. My mother encouraged these daydreams. She, d ask me
if I had been especially kind to someone. Perhaps it was one of my classmates. Perhaps it was the
old man. He lived across from the street. I’d sent him his mail during the winter. As a girl, though, I
had more fun imagining that it might be a boy that I had met.
    A month before my high school graduation(畢業(yè)), my father died. I was so sad that I became
uninterested in my upcoming graduation dance, and I didn’t care whether I had a new dress or not.
My mother, in her won sadness, however, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her
children to feel loved. In fact, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia:
lovely, strong and perfect, with perhaps a bit of mystery(神秘).
     When I was 22, I got married. My mother died ten years after I was married. That was the year
the gardenia stopped coming.

  My respecting teacher

  I always thought that a man who was wise (睿智的) and good would become rich, but this year I have learned that this is not always true. I learned this from my teacher. We got to the clean, lovely city of Yangzhou early in the morning. This is our first trip to China. All the different smells attract our attention to the local food. We are going to try something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is not expensive but very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to the Great Wall in the north.

We visited the famous Slender West Lake (瘦西湖) which was crowded with visitors from all over the world, and bought a lot of toys for our friends outside the gate of the park. Everything is so colourful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will do the famous foot massage (按摩) and then leave for the Great Wall. We will take the night train north, stay in Beijing for two days, and then catch a bus to the Great Wall.

Dear Caitlin,

     I looked again at the gray shell. That's no sunset, I thought. "You must mean the submarines at your house,

    Ever thought of moving to a new country? How about starting a new country? Patri Friedman is
planning to do just that. He left Google years ago to set up the Seasteading Institute. And his dream is
to build seasteads-----floating micro-nations in the middle of the ocean.
    So, what will life on a seastead be like? Probably a bit like life on a cruise liner ( 游輪), but much
larger, with shops , gyms , swimming pools, schools and other areas. In fact , the early seasteads may
actually be specially-rebuilt cruise liners. But as science advances, Friedman believes they’ll become
more like floating cities, with several hundred people.

He founded PayPal and was one of the first investors (投資者) in Facebook. So far , he’s donated $
500,000 to the project.
    And Friedman isn’t wasting any time . He recently announced the creation of the Poseidon Award.
This will be given to the first seastead with fifty people. Friedman is hoping to hand out the award in
