【答案】例文:

Dear Mike,

Thank you very much for your concern. Last month, several places in Beijing were blanketed with thick yellow fog. Everything around disappeared from our sight. Some highways were closed. Traffic jams were commonly seen in the streets.

Many people especially children and senior citizens found it difficult to breathe. As a result, local hospitals were crowded with people who had problems with their noses and lungs. Part of the cause was the dry weather but the severely damaged environment contributed a lot to this nightmare. Personally, I didn’t get any health problems in the haze because I stayed mostly indoors. But to make a significant change, we really have to do more to protect our environment. To live a better life, we have to push on with economy, but it wound be meaningless if we have to achieve it at the cost of our breathing air.

In my opinion, everyone should take part in reducing air pollution. As for me, I will take the bus or subway to work instead of driving. If I buy things from supermarket, I will bring a bag rather than using the plastic bag. So together, our actions can make a difference and lead to a better future!

Best regards!

Yours,

Li Hua

【題目】 Marco Polo was born in Italy in 1254. When he was 17, he travelled across Europe and Asia with his father, who wanted to do trade with the Chinese. Finally they arrived in Beijing. They were guests at the Emperor's Palace. Although Marco Polo was young, he was very clever and could speak some foreign languages. The Emperor was impressed by him. He asked Marco Polo to serve in his court (宮廷) and sent him to do many important tasks across the country.

Marco Polo was amazed by the beautiful China. He was impressed by Beijing and the Emperor’s Palace, especially the Summer Palace which he described as “The greatest palace that ever was...” The walls were covered with gold and silver and the hall was so large that it could easily seat 6,000 people for dinner.

There were inventions and developments in China which were not used in Europe at that time. He was puzzled (困惑的) by the black stones people used to burn to produce heat. The black stones were coal, but Marco Polo had never seen coal before!

In 1295, after 17 years of service to the Emperor, Marco Polo returned to Italy. He was then a very wealthy man. A writer wrote down the stories that Marco Polo told him in a book called The Travels of Marco Polo.

Although people enjoyed reading the book, many of them thought that Marco Polo’s stories about China were too fantastic to be true. But Marco Polo always stood by his tales. 【題目】 One of the main purposes of traveling is to relax and take a break from your normal daily life. Whatever the truth is, we’re not always free to do what we like when traveling to a foreign country, and a US tourist learned that the hard way.

On Aug 12, the unnamed 4l-year-old man was beaten by a passer-by after he was seen giving Nazi salutes(納粹禮) again and again on a street in Dresden, Germany.

Ever since the end of World War II, Germany has had strict laws to forbid the Nazi salute, as well as other symbols of Nazism.

In fact, most countries have their own taboos. If you plan to travel overseas, it's best to get familiar with these taboos before you start touring local sites. The following are some examples.

Singapore

You can get fined for a lot of things in Singapore, including feeding birds, spitting, urinating in public, smoking in public, not flushing a public toilet after you use it, and eating or drinking on buses or trains.

Japan

You're not supposed to wear your shoes in someone’s house, but you're not supposed to take your shoes off outside the house either. Instead, there's a small area inside the door called a “genkan” which is where your shoes should go. If you're still not sure where that is, pay attention to what other people do and do the same.

France

French people don't like it when you talk about money. It's OK if you say that you want to quit a job because you are paid little money, but you should never say the exact amount. Money is a “dirty” topic in France.

1When traveling abroad, we can’t ________.

A.relax and take a break from normal daily life

B.follow what other people do and do the same

C.be always free to do whatever we like

D.tour the local sites and give salutes
