Born in 1938, Williams was the fourth of nine children. At age 8, he joined his father in the fields and
picked cotton and vegetables until sunset every day. His family was so poor that they couldn't afford to go
to school. When he grew up and married, he had to work hard to support his own family. Finally, he
became old, poor and in bad health. However, he still remembered his promise to his mother. He knew he
had to learn to read to make his life better.
One day in 2006, Williams was taking his friend's children to school when he saw Alessia Hamilton,
a teacher at the school. She seemed very kind, and he thought maybe she could teach him how to read.
So he asked her, and she agreed to try.
On his first day of school, Williams wasn't sure if his classmates would accept him, but they did. And
now they love him. Williams says, "I tell the kids they can have anything they want in life if they stay in
school."
Reading has given Williams a new sense of freedom. Now he reads newspapers, books, magazines and
the signs. He believes he can achieve his goal of reading.
