Aristotle once wrote that “happiness is a state(狀態(tài)) of activity” In other words, whether you want life-long happiness or a few moments of good cheer, you’ve got to move forward. We’ve found five steps to take toward happiness.
University of Illinois researchers asked nearly 1,200 people how money, volunteer activities and close relationships influenced their happiness. Reported Newsweek’s Sharon Begley on the findings, “The highest levels of happiness are found in the most stable(穩(wěn)定的) relationships. ” The new study found those who were friends of happy people had a greater chance of being happy themselves.
Singing aloud, talking to a stranger: all may increase a feeling of happiness, according to the study. Participants(參與者)followed the advice for two weeks and felt happier.
The researchers also gave $5 or $20 to 46 strangers by chance. Half the group was told to spend the money on themselves, while the other half was told to spend it on others. Those who spent the wealth on others felt much happier than those who spent it on themselves. There was no difference in happiness between those who spent $5 or $20, suggesting that it’s not how much money you spend, but how you spend it, that bring joy and satisfaction.
What’s more, Studies showed that discouraged (氣餒的) people who wrote down three good things each day for six months became happier.

根據(jù)第二段“… researchers asked nearly 1,200 people how money, volunteer activities and close relationships influenced their happiness.” 故答案為purpose/aim/goal。
【2】
根據(jù)第二段“The highest levels of happiness are found in the most stable relationships.”
根據(jù)第二段最后一句“…those who were friends of happy people had a greater chance of being happy themselves.”
根據(jù)第四段“Those who spent the wealth on others felt much happier than those who spent it on themselves.”
根據(jù)最后一段“discouraged (氣餒的) people who wrote down three good things each day for six months became happier.”
比如小題2,找到第二小題的關(guān)鍵句在第二段,然后在理解的基礎(chǔ)上把“The highest levels of happiness”轉(zhuǎn)述成“the best”即可,所以此題答案為best。

The founder of Huawei seldom spoke to the media, while he let his company's fast growth do the talking. That's changing as Huawei finds itself in a dangerous situation in the US. Ren, 74, tells CNN in an interview that the challenges Huawei faces are just so common for him. "There are always difficulties for me. I never had smooth sailing because when I was young, my family background wasn't good. I had to work really hard to get even just a little bit of opportunity to work."
In 1974, Ren joined the PLA (中國(guó)人民解放軍) as an engineer. During that period, the country was suffering from terrible food and clothing shortages (短缺). "I had been to college, and people like me could play a role." he said. After the PLA, Ren worked for an oil company before founding Huawei in 1987. It was set up in Shenzhen, which was just a fishing village then.
To get market share, Ren suffered serious depression (抑郁) during the darkest days of the company. Ren pushed staff to work long hours and do whatever it took to save business. Unable to compete in the big cities, Huawei worked on China's small towns and villages. All the time, Ren devoted a lot to research and development, pushing Huawei to create its own technology that would make it compete with its competitors.
Ren worked long hours leaving him little time to build strong relationships with his three children. He has said that while in the PLA, he spent just one month a year with his family. After starting Huawei, "I had to spend 16 hours a day in the office," he said. He once asked his kids whether they’d like him to spend more time with the family or work to "build a platform (平臺(tái))" on which they could grow. His children chose the latter (后者).

There is nothing better than an old-fashioned swimming hole to get away from the heat this summer. Here's where to find the best places all over the country.
Madison Blue Spring, Florida This naturally-formed spring (泉水) lives up to its name (名副其實(shí)): The water is blue and attractive. Now a state park, the 25-foot deep swimming hole lies inside a lovely forest next to the Withlacoochee River in northern Florida. If you are brave, you can even swim into the hole's underwater caves. | Santa Rosa Blue Hole, New Mexico Like an oasis (綠洲) in the desert, this swimming hole keeps a perfect temperature of 62 degrees. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom. It is because the water, which is connected to an underwater cave system (系統(tǒng)), renews itself every six hours. You can even jump in from the edge of the broken sinkhole (沉洞), which is off the famous highway Route 66. |
Switzer Falls, California You can get out of the city with a trip to the Bear Canyon area of Angeles National Forest near Los Angeles. Follow the river to the 50-foot Switzer Falls, and you can pass lots of natural pools before and after the waterfall (瀑布). You can choose what you like! Getting there requires hiking a couple of miles out and back, but the cool water on a hot day is worth it. | Peekamoose Blue Hole, New York Sometimes natural beauty can be nearly ruined because it is famous. The Peekamoose Blue Hole is in such a worrying situation. The swimming hole faced overuse, environmental harm and pollution. So strict rules were made to protect the quiet place several years ago. There are only three important days in everyone’s life and two of them are the ones that you don't need to worry about. Serigne Fallou Mbacke, a man of God, who lived in Senegal (West Africa) between 1888 and 1968, used to say, “The day is today, it is the only day, the past is gone and will never come back and the future belongs to God.”
Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1811—1896, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, once said almost the same thing, “The past, the present, and the future are really one: they are today.”
We all know that many people spend one half of their days regretting for the past, and the other half worrying about the future, leaving no time to enjoy the present when everything happens. How can such people get ahead in life? People all over the world have made countless discussions on the subject but it does not seem to make a difference. Most of us are still everywhere but in the present.
As the saying goes, if you do what everybody does, you will get what everybody gets! Make a difference, and live in the present. It will help you achieve more, become a better person and live a happier life, a life without worries.
Today is all you have. There is no guarantee ( 保證 )that you will live to see tomorrow and there is not a thing you can change about the past. Dennis Waitley who is a speaker and author puts it so beautifully in one of his books: The past is a cancelled check, the future is a promissory note ( 期 票 ), but the present, the present is liquid cash.
Always remember that today is a gift and that is the reason why it is called the present.
【1】Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.The future belongs to God.B.No one can change the past.
C.Living in today will help you achieve more.D.We are sure that we will live to see tomorrow.
【2】Who described the three important days as "check, note and cash"?
A.The writer.B.Serigne Fallou Mbacke.
C.Harriet Beecher Stowe.D.Dennis Waitley.
【3】Why is today called the present according to the passage?
A.Because today is a gift.
B.Because people are always worrying about today.
C.Because people are always' worrying about the future.
D.Because people have made countless discussions on the subject.
【4】Which of the following words can best describe the author's attitude towards "today"?
A.Unconcerned.B.Negative.C.Favorable.D.Doubtful.
