It was six o'clock in the evening. The visitors had left the museum. Jose, head of art division(藝術(shù)部), was walking around, checking to see that everything was all right. Suddenly, Jose saw something on the floor. What do you think he saw? He saw a beautiful painting lying there. Jose showed the painting to the director(館長(zhǎng))of the museum.
“Let's call several museums to check and see if it's a stolen painting,” said the director.
No one knew the painting, so the director decided to hang it in the art division. All the experts(專家)came to see the painting. Each one said it was beautiful and had very deep(深刻的)meaning. The director was very happy to have such a wonderful painting in his museum.
Several weeks later, a woman came to the museum with her five-year-old son. While they were looking at the new painting, the little boy began to cry. The director came over to the child and said:
“Why are you crying?”
The child pointed to the painting and said:
“I'm crying because that's my painting on the wall, and I want it back.”
“Yes,” said his mother,“I was here with Danny a few weeks ago, and he left his painting right here on the floor. If you look carefully, you can see his name.” The director looked at the boy and his mother uncomfortably(不安地).He did not know what to say.

Most dictionaries will tell you a lot of things about a language. There are three important things. These three things are spelling, pronunciation(發(fā)音) and meanings. First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a word. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order(按字母順序)-a, b, c and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the word “poor” p, o, o, r-comes before “poverty” -p, o, v, e, r, t, y-and the word “poverty” comes before the word “power” -p, o, w, e, r. The words are always given in alphabetical order.
The second thing, a dictionary will tell you how a word is pronounced. There are a few different pronunciations. Most dictionaries give phonetic (語音的), or sound alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International phonetic alphabet(國(guó)際音際) to show pronunciation.
The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meanings of words. You can look up a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary also tell you all of the word's meanings. For example, in English the word “get” has over 20 different meanings.
